The American Dream has changed and evolved throughout the ages and it is different for everybody. The American Dream is someone's goal in life, there are people who achieve their dream and set a new goal. The American Dream is always changing to fit the needs and wants of people. The American Dream has changed and evolved through the eras Of Mice and Men to Death of a Salesman to Still I Rise to today focusing mainly on wealth, success and family. Of Mice and Men illustrates the pre-corrupted American Dream of giving life purpose and something to look forward to. George and Lennie hope to buy their own farm and defy what society tells them to do. Society tells them that they should “work on ranches, be the loneliest guys in the world.” (Steinbeck 12) They believe that they can achieve their dream George tells Lennie that with them its not “like that. We got a future.... An' why? Because...because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why.” (Steinbeck 12) They believe that because they have each other they can achieve the American Dream. Maya Angelou says that “You may write me down in history/ With your bitter, twisted lies,/ You may trod me in the very dirt/ But still, like dust, I’ll rise.” (Angelou 1-4) She has the confidence to overcome what anybody says against her and still be brave. She says that people can “shoot me with your words,/ You may cut me with your eyes,/ You may kill me with your hatefulness,/ But still, like air, I’ll rise.” (Angelou 21-24) She is not afraid of means words, cruel looks, and hatred from people.
