The American Dream is the concept that underpins the United States Constitution and holds that an individual's ability to accomplish is mostly determined by their own hard work and determination, rather than by their social status or level of wealth. The Crucible starkly shattered this illusion of peace. The crucible Hypocrisy is the act of acting in a way that is at odds with one's own values or views. Equiano discusses the ship's circumstances and the hardships the slaves faced throughout the story. The situation on board the ship is uncomfortable, even if the slaves were never released. "The closeness of the place, and the heat of the climate added to the number in the ship, which was so crowded. Only those who made every effort to ruin the lives of others were granted freedom in the story of The Life of Olaudah Equiano. Equiano describes the circumstances of the ship and the hardships the slaves faced throughout the story. Although the slaves were never released, the conditions on board the ship were uncomfortable. Equiano narrates the horrifying event as follows: "The proximity of the location, coupled with the warm temperature and a packed ship that left little space for people to turn around, nearly caused asphyxia" (Equiano 171). Equiano's story is that of a journey from ignorance to wisdom, another sees it as a journey from freedom into captivity and back
