Compare and Contrast Essay There is a great deal of things you can differentiate from the Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank and Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston. These two books are similar because they take place in the same time frame, but different regions when the world was undergoing World War II. These two books document the story of two families that was affected by this time. The Diary of Anne Frank is about how she and her friends and family lived throughout World War II.
Night by Elie Wiesel was a novel with great horror and suffering during the Holocaust. “Three days later, a new decree:every Jew had to wear the yellow star”(Wiesel 11).This quote marks the beginning of the religious segregation for Eliezer and his family. At this time the Jews had to wear stars, but as the novel progressed it got worse. It started as clothing then went to ghettos. Ghettos were enclosed districts where Jews lived separately from the world.

In Source A, a young Jewish girl, Anne Frank, wrote in her diary that the Gestapo was taking away Jewish friends and acquaintances and sending them away to concentration camps. She listened to the English radio to later find out that they were being killed and gassed. Source B reveals, that in the steps to genocide, people classified as different are prohibited rights and personal honor. In Night by Eli Wiesel, Eli showed many examples on how the Nazis tried to dehumanize the Jews during the Holocaust. One example of the dehumanization of the Jews took place just before the Ghettos and their transportation. On page eleven, Elie narrates, “Three days later, a new decree: every Jew had to wear the yellow star.” This yellow star, that at first seemed harmless, would cause them great pain. This labeled the Jews just like they would tag animals.

She was given the diary as a present from her parents in 1942, and named it Kitty. Through her diary writing, Anne Frank was in many ways her own counsellor in a time of great suffering and tribulation.
