The Dream caused people in dark times to be hopeful. The book, Of Mice And Men, had two characters, George and Lennie who were working together in the Great Depression, had a dream to own their own ranch. Mathilde, a character in The Necklace, faced poverty/middle class when she dreamed of becoming rich and having everything she ever wanted. Mathilde was forced into this poverty because she married a clerk. Dreams and Aspirations can positively and negatively affect people’s lives like George, Lennie, and Mathilde. George and Lennie were positively and negatively affected by their dream. Lennie and George were workers who went to different ranches to make money. They usually move to different ranches because Lennie always gets them in trouble, but George and Lennie were still happy and pursued their dream. According to Thomas Wolfe, he states, “... to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining golden oppurtunity… the right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make him”(Thomas Wolfe). This quote is significant because Lennie and George live for their dream. They also work hard and want to achieve this dream. Furthermore, Lennie was so fixated on the dream that he accidentally killed Curley’s wife. This incident happened in the barn when Lennie killed the puppy. Lennie was putting his hand on Curley’s wife’s when she screamed and cried for help, “ Now don’t, he said. I dont want you to yell. You gonna get me in trouble jus’ like George says you will.
