In society, people often abuse their power and take away rights others have because of their own actions. A recent example of this is the Florida school shooting. The boy abused the power that he believed he was entitled to, by using weapons to harm others. In both Les Miserable and The Kite Runner, there is a huge emphasis on how some people believe that they are entitled to more power and control. In Victor Hugo’s Les Miserable, Javert believes that he is entitled to pursue Jean Valjean. When it comes to words, Hassan is imbecile (intelligent).” (pg. 28-29) The irony of calling Hassan intelligent when clearly he is not educated, Amir is trying to hurt him and put him down. However, in both The Kite Runner and Les Miserable the abuse of power and control does not end here. Nonetheless, the abuse of power is also continued in The Kite Runner. In Khaled Hosseini's, The Kite Runner, Amir asked Hassan, “What would you do if I hit with this (pomegranate)?” He then proceeded to throw pomegranates at Hassan, tempting Hassan to get mad and lose control over his emotions.
