People should pursue justice, which is to help order the society. Once Francis Bacon said, “If we do not maintain justice, justice will not maintain us.” It means that if we do not maintain justice, then we will lose everything including life because of injustice. It can destroy us and the whole society. I strongly agree with this quote because people are often in danger because they do not follow justice. Injustice makes an unordered society and brings death. In the text, the author used symbolism to show us the quote is true. Symbolism is the use of objects to represent ideas. The character Mrs Hutchinson participated in the traditional program. She picked up the lottery from a black box and she won the lottery unlucky. The black box stands for death because townspeople used the box to conduct the lottery. As she won the lottery, she was stoned by people because of the brutal tradition. But no one tried to stop the cruel tradition. The stones are another symbolism in the story. In the beginning of text, children played stones as toys. They made a pile of stones in the corner. However, they used stones to kill the character in the end. It stands for death and injustice because townspeople use stones to kill the person who wins the lottery and make the society becomes disordered and unsafe. This story demonstrates us that if people do not pursue the justice, then people and society will be destroyed. Otherwise, justice will help us to order the society and repeal the brutal tradition.
