Pray The Devil Back to Hell is a movie that is both inspiring and award-worthy. The movie takes place from around 1999 to 2003 (primarily the year of 2003, but there are mentions of 2006 and 2011) in Liberia, a country that went through an intense civil war. The movie follows the story of Leymah Gbowee, the founder and main woman involved in the Women’s Peace Building Network. She tries her hardest to bring peace to Liberia as it is in the midst of an intense civil war. A moving story, Pray the Devil Back to Hell is a movie that will show that when all hope is lost, there can still be a bright light at the end of the tunnel. The most compelling story belongs to the main character, Leymah Gbowee. Leymah Gbowee is a mother, social worker, and leader of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace. It is amazing how she grew from praying for peace in a local fish market to being the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. Even when in Liberia, life seemed hopeless, a group of women scavenged up hope which lead to a peaceful rebellion against the corrupt president. Even when life seems despairing, there is always a light somewhere, and as long as one can grasp that light, it is possible to find meaning a purpose once again to life. This can be tied into the “Year of Mercy” because during the movie the women speak of forgiving the boys who killed and their husbands that supported this civil war. Even though it can be hard to forgive others, these women finally realize that those boys who were killing and their husbands who followed the corrupt president, only did so because they were scared.
