Comparing The Poems 'Predators And' A Blessing

Some people think of animals as pets or companions. Animals for others are considered as predators or a threat. The poem “A Blessing,” written by James Wright and the poem, “Predators,” by Linda Hogan, present animals and people in different ways than one another and their works share many similarities and differences.

The two poems and the way that animals are presented in each are very similar and different. First, the animals presented are very similar to each other in the poems even though they aren’t the same species. In the poem “A Blessing,” the animals (ponies) are tame and calm towards humans. First of all, the speakers in each care about their own animals in a similar way. The speaker from “Predators,” loves her animals and even worries about their safety. The speaker talks about how she worried for her animals and how she wanted to keep them safe from the wild animals roaming her garden. That shows that she loved them and wanted to keep them safe. In the poem, “A Blessing,” the speaker loves the horses and wants to be around them as much as possible. The speaker talks about how she loved to pet them and visit them often. This shows that she loved those two Indian ponies very much. Both of the speakers loved and cared for their animals and that is one similarity between the ways that humans are presented in the two poems. Second of all, the speakers presented in each are different. This is because at the end of the poem, they learn or understand different things. In the poem, “Predators,” the speaker understands that if domesticated and wild animals cross paths, bad things can happen. In the text it states, “The dogs do not understand wild nature... Oh, give me strength to watch their sorry looks as a bevy of vixen feed on a much smaller body, not the cat’s… but it could be.” So, because her dog doesn’t understand wild nature she understands that she needs to be super careful so that that smaller body doesn’t become one of her pets. However, in the poem, “A Blessing,” the speaker learns how animals can impact humans in a positive way. In the text, it says, “They have come gladly out of the willows to welcome my friend and me.” This shows that animals can care for humans and that they can impact a human in a very positive way. In all, those are some of the ways that humans are presented in each and how they are similar and
