Themes in a story help to describe what the book is about. It does this in the book Night by helping describe what World War 2 was like for the Jews. It also helps to see what the people in the camps went through. My two themes from night are imprisonment and survival. The first one I will talk about is imprisonment, then i’ll talk about survival.
Theme is a message or underlying meaning of a story, that the author is trying to portray to the reader. the class read three short stories the common theme is “society should not dictate the ethical path one takes in life”. Three stories with this theme are, Two Kinds (By Amy Tan), The Endless Street Car Ride Into The Night, and the Tinfoil Noose (By Jean Shepard), and Summer is Gone (By Susie Kretschmer). Loss of innocence and ambiguity are found in the stories The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, Prey by Richard Matheson, and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner. Ambiguity and loss of innocence are present in all these stories. By setting a tone of ambiguity, the reader is left to make their own conclusions throughout the stories. This allows the reader’s own imagination to add depth to each of the stories.

Authors use an abundance of different techniques when developing and engraving theme into their story. It is an important element that makes a story unique.
Authors can develop themes in many different ways . Annabel Lee, by Edgar Allen Poe, is about his child hood love and how jealousy killed his love. A Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost, is about how your choices in your early life affect your later life. A Bird Came Down, by Emily Dickenson, is about a person describing the course of nature.

In nature two trees can have many similarities, but they all have their own little differences. The same thing can be said for “The Tell Tale” and “The Raven” both written works by the author Edgar Allan Poe. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is a short story about an insane man who wants to murder a man just because of the old man's eye. “The Raven” is about a man who is trying to get rid of a raven in his house and takes out the anger of his dead wife on the raven Even though Edgar Allan POE’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Raven” have their differences, but also share many similarities.
In the 2 poems, “The Raven” and “The Cremation of Sam McGee”, the authors create a suspenseful and mysterious feeling and tone. Edgar Allan Poe and Robert W. Service have writing techniques that are similar throughout the two poems. These techniques keep the reader curious and invested in the story being told. Mystery and suspense help keep a reader interested in what they are reading. These things also keep the story unpredictable and moving.
A theme in a book would be a special setting or just foucing on one charter other than multiple. " The Outsiders " by S.E. Hinton uses theme in a couple different ways. Such as putting charters through ups and downs in life. " Nothing Gold Can Stay" is a poem written by Robert Frost.
A Literary Analysis: “The Raven” - Edgar Allen Poe “Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore—Tell me what thy/lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!”/Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.” (“Poe” line 46-48) Out of all of Edgar Allen Poe works, “The Raven, a beautifully written poem with a depressing story, is possibly the best because of it’s popularity, but also for it’s power of making the reader feel and understand what is happening to the character.
Theme is the message about life or human nature that is “the focus” in the story that the writer tells ( Glossary of Literary Terms 3). A theme in this story would be “Love and Blindness”. This falls under the theme category because it is saying love itself changes the way you are as a person but it also has its blindness. The “blindness” is not so much of not being able to see them physically but how they truly are as a person. A person can be very depressing, arrogant, or even abusive but the person in love will see past it hence the term blind.
He used his life experiences in his works such as The Masque of the Red Death and The Black Cat. Though Poe had a few other works such as The Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven; they did not portray much of his life experiences and feelings like these ones did. Poe’s themes of death, insanity, and emotion through eyes in his works reflect the actual themes in his life. Death throughout Poe’s life has had an impact in his work. In reading several of his works, the reader sees him using his experiences within those works.
“The death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world” was a statement by Edgar Allan Poe. It is a very strong statement, for death, in the non-literary world, is not typically associated with anything poetical. In fact, many would argue that death is the opposite of poetical. If poetical means, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, “having an imaginative or sensitive emotional style of expression”, then it can be said that death is unpoetical. Death is the end of one’s emotions, and in non-literal terms, death can be the lack of emotions.

How is death presented in the six poems ? The theme of death is apparent in all of the poems. Some are natural deaths, other deaths of planned or caused. The natural deaths are unavoidable whereas the other deaths are intentional.
