The Trickster character has existed since the origin of comedy. This role is still an important part of many comedies today. In this paper, I will compare and contrast the trickster characters of Tranio in The Haunted House with Ferris Bueller from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Tranio and Ferris have different social and economic backgrounds and different motives for their foolery. However, both characters rebel against the system and push for social change, influence others and create wild plots and scenarios to get themselves and others out of trouble.

They are the antagonists in the movie. They are on a mission to catch Ferris in his lies and punish him. Ferris’ sister is an interesting character because she represents how teenagers should conform to societies rules at the time. However, she is jealous of what Ferris is able to do and she struggles internally with these thoughts. She would like get away with some of the things Ferris is able to do and also feels the pressure of society. That is why she eventually chooses to save Ferris at a critical part in the movie. She too ends up rebelling against the system and revolts against the school principle to save Ferris. In The Haunted House only a fellow slave named Grumio is aware of Tranio’s antics. He quickly disappears after the first scene so no one is out to catch Tranio throughout the story. It is only his own web of lies that finally catches up with him when Theopropides finds out he has been duped. Tranio also seems more concerned with his own individual happiness and distancing himself from the life of a slave. Ferris seems to have the goal of helping his friend enjoy life more and helping him handle his family problems better. Ferris highlights social and economic aspects directly.
