Everyone has some sort of similarities to each other even when they are complete opposites. They could not like the same things but without even knowing they could have similar approaches to situations in life. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald has a handful of characters and even if it doesn’t seem like it at first, the characters are more similar than the reader initially thinks. Tom and Wilson both are two very different people when you get a glimpse at them, but once you look deeper than you would notice a similarity or two. Tom is selfish, only worries about himself and is always talking about how better he is than everyone else. Then Wilson is the loner type, he minds his own business and does his own thing without worrying about trying to be better than everyone. “Certainly not for a common swindler who’d have to steal the ring he put on her finger.” (Buchanan) Tom is implying that what he gets Daisy is better and more expensive than what Gatsby could ever give her. So in other words he is better than Gastsby so why would Daisy choose Gatsby over him. “He was a blond, spiritless man, anemic, and faintly handsome.” (Carraway) Describing Wilson as a “spiritless man” is saying that he doesn’t really have any emotion or spirit so with this information we can assume he keeps to himself and minds his business which is not what Tom does in the slightest. When they both found out their wives were cheating they both were not happy. “You’re crazy! I can’t speak about what happened 5 years ago because I didn’t know Diays then. And I’ll be damned if I see how you got within a mile of her unless you brought the groceries to the back door…” (Buchanan) As we can see Tom was not very happy when he came to the conclusion that Daisy had been with Gatsby.“I’ve got my wife locked up in there, She's going to stay there till the day after tomorrow, and then we’re going to move away.” Locking his wife up until they move is proving that when he found out about the affair she was having, he was not very happy. These similarities are the exact same things, but they are so similar it is hard not to recognize them. With every difference Tom and WIlson have like being selfish and to himself, they have some similarities like being impulsive and hurt. Even though we see Tom and Wilson in very different ways, we can’t ignore the similarities between the two. No matter who a person is and how different they are to others, I think that they are going to have some similarities to someone else whether that be their sibling or their worst
