State testing has caused a lot of problems in the Bismarck Public School District, along with many other school districts in North Dakota. The problems are caused by how the testing is prepared and making sure scheduling works for everyone. Getting rid of state testing will not get rid of testing but have the students take less tests. Rather than taking state testing Freshman and Sophomore year, take the ACT Aspire test instead. The school and student can see how well they do on the ACT when they take it in their Junior year. Eliminating state testing by replacing it with Aspire and the ACT will save money for the state, decrease student stress, and increase instructional time. Multiple problems are created by state testing with one of the problems being the time used to take the test. Some of the tests, such as the English portion, takes two days of class time to complete. These extreme tests used in the public school system do not accurately measure what the students have studied (Strauss). States have required students to take annual tests in reading and math from third to eighth grade and once in high school (Klein).
The tests do not aid students in preparing for college or future careers (Strauss). The ACT and SAT are tests that benefit a student's future. It assists them for a brighter future since the ACT and SAT get the student into college. The state makes state testing optional already since students can opt-out of the tests with their parent’s permission. Many students choose the opt-out option because they see the point in the testing. In Mrs. Berg’s opinion, students should just take the test instead of sitting in their math or English class working on nothing, when they could be working on bettering
