These themes are common in most of the stories and poems read during this semester. It has enabled me to realize the similarities in many of the books people read everyday and what lessons are learned. These lesson can go from simple to complex. The freedom for some ethnicities in some environments can be hard because they can be easily discriminated against because of their race or their color. The masks people wear are to hide their true feelings, so they become something that people will become more accepting of and not judge them.

Without a theme, a story is just a story with little meaning. To test whether a theme is worthy, the reader should ask whether it teaches a lesson, whether it's revealed through characters and whether it applies to the entire work. Several themes in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel and in the movie The Book Thief pass this test. In Night, Elie writes a memoir about how he and his family are sent to Aushwits, a concentration camp, for being Jewish during the holocaust.

“You can't tell any kind of a story without having some kind of a theme, something to say between the lines (Robert Wise). ” This quote shows that a piece of literature isn’t literature without a theme. Themes are ways to help the reader sympathize with the thoughts and opinions of an author. Orson Scott Card, an author of science fiction and fantasy, wrote Ender’s Game, a book about Ender who went to a battle school (IF or International Fleet) in order to learn how to fight when the buggers invade their planet. This book held two central themes: children have the potential to be powerful in society, and how resorting to violence is never right.
In literature, theme is a tool writers use to convey a deeper meaning. In Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza, several significant themes are conveyed throughout the memoir. These include faith and forgiveness as a source of strength, violence and prejudice as learned behaviors; friends becoming enemies, and the loss of innocence. The most apparent theme is faith and forgiveness as a source of strength because of how Immaculee's faith guides her through the genocide and how forgiveness gives her the power to let go and heal her enemies.
One example towards the beginning of the novel is found on page seventeen. In this chapter, Salva had come up with a plan and he said, “I will go back to my village and find my family.” This is an example of the theme because Salva is not jumping to the task of finding his family, he is taking small steps in order to achieve it. Another important event that occured in the middle of the novel is when Salva’s friend, Marial, was taken during the night and eaten by a lion. In chapter 6 the narrator said, “A cold heart seemed to grip Salva’s heart.”
Authors can develop themes in many different ways . Annabel Lee, by Edgar Allen Poe, is about his child hood love and how jealousy killed his love. A Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost, is about how your choices in your early life affect your later life. A Bird Came Down, by Emily Dickenson, is about a person describing the course of nature.
The theme of a piece of literary work is kind of like a main idea and it could be hidden within the story. In Rikki Tikki Tavi, which was written by Rudyard Kipling, I know that there can be a debate on what the theme could be. The evidence in the text can help aid the reader to understand what the theme is in the piece of literature. That is why I know without a doubt that the theme is “good triumphs over evil.”
Throughout literary work every reader will come across a theme, or themes, present. A theme is the central idea or ideas explored in a story. Each reader will decipher the themes of a story differently than another but open interpretation is what makes literature beautiful. One widely known literary work that I will write about is The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller. The play was not only inspired by the Salem witch trials that took place in Massachusetts in 1692 but the McCarthy trials during the 1950’s.
In the curriculum, CRT helps demonstrate the continuing pattern that racial minorities go through and help students comprehend the basis of the problem. Racial attitudes in the media have affected people of color’s perception of their own races. A great example of this comes from the famous play called, Dutchman and The Slave Jones (1964). It was written in the 1960s and illustrates the hate between blacks and whites in America. The story follows Lula, a white woman who symbolizes “White America,” and Clay, a black male who represents black identity and manhood.
