John Locke and Thomas Hobbes were early English philosophers who each had very different views on the roles of the government and the people being governed. Their interpretations of human nature each had a lasting and vast impact on modern political science. Locke believed that men had the right to revolt against oppressive government. “‘Being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions.”
Hobbes argued that once an individual is a part of an absolute monarchy, they no longer have the rights to branch away from the government. He created the idea that people who are a part of this absolutist society cannot fight against the authority because it provides protection for the people. Locke had another viewpoint which regarded the protection of the people, but he saw it in a civil society. Locke explained that the social contract was the result of men who had the equal rights as a natural concept of life. He preached that all men have rights and freedom to express their opinions and protection of their property.
Hobbes believed that “it is not possible for people to have both freedom and peace, since the state of freedom is a state of unlimited greed and war.” (Document C). i believe that hobbes is right about how there are many selfish people and if it came down to you or them, who would you choose? It is most likely that one chooses to save themselves because at a certain time it comes down to survival. Hobbes thought that we should have a ruler such as a king or queen because “democracy- allowing citizens to vote for government leaders- would never work.
Thomas Hobbes and John locke were both famous philosophers during the enlightenment period. They were social contract theorists and natural law theorists, they both impacted the modern government, modern science, and the world in general tremendously. However that is where the resemblance ends. If one looks more deeply, they will see that these two philosophers actually had very contrasting opinions. Hobbes was more pessimistic about the world whereas Locke had a more optimistic outlook on his surrounding environment.
Hobbes vs Locke When a unlawful crime happens we are shocked and paralyzed by fear and despair. Well ,with these crimes comes governmental responsibility this is why. Without a strictly ruled government violence, no productivity, and consequently no knowledge of the Earth would result. To begin, with “Without a common power to keep them in awe, it will result in a state of war” as Thomas Hobbes states. Strict power is important, absences of this allows us to forget that we are all equal and no one is higher than the other.
The Enlightenment: Hobbes vs. Locke Two famous philosophers, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, have contributed to modern political science by expressing their views on human nature and the general laws that man had to follow. Both of their views differed in terms of how man should live his life. These views will be shown by comparing both philosophers’ opinions on the nature of man, and the various laws that constituted. Man was naturally evil, selfish, and living in a state of war, according to Hobbes. He believed that “humans were created “bad” by their creator”, and were “condemned to live in a world where bad things happen” (The Enlightenment, 1650-1789, p. 6).
Thomas Hobbes and John Locke are two theorists known for their views regarding the social contract. Both theorists study the origins of government and the level of authority given to the state over individuals, thoroughly constructing their arguments through the social contract. A philosophical approach was used in both Hobbes’s and Locke’s arguments, however supporting different authorities. Thomas Hobbes advocates for absolutism whilst John Locke advocates for a constitutional government. Through the close examination of the state of nature, the relationships between subject and sovereign and views regarding the social contract, one can observe a more sensible basis for constructing a successful political society.
Most communities today rely on a basic form of government whether it be a democracy or a monarchy. If government was taking away the simple fact can be argued that chaos would break loose or people will naturally be peaceful. John Locke and Thomas Hobbes both delved into the ideal government of the people. Both agreed in a form of government should be established to keep some kind of peace, but both ideas differed in the way the government function. After analyzing both philosophers, it should be that a government should be established based on human's nature to sin, but Locke’s ideas are perceived to be more developed in a realistic government applied today.
During the Enlightenment Period, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke were two people that set forth the ways they thought a government should be run. They both had very conflicting views. Thomas Hobbes believed in a absolute monarchy. He believe that people were cruel and greedy and that without a powerful and strict government they would not follow laws. He believed that for people to escape this dreadful life, they entered a social contract, or an agreement of giving up their freedom for an organized society.
The age of enlightenment produced many new thoughts and ideas on how the world worked, and not all of them agreed. An example of this would be Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Both these men had new complex ideas about the fundamental nature of human beings. John Locke believed that all men are born with certain rights and are fundamentally good; while Thomas Hobbes believed that one man should hold all the power and without government and rules humans would be in a constant state of chaos fighting over power. I personally agree with Locke because of his views on basic human rights, how involved people should be in the government, and how he fundamentally viewed people.
When comparing the two different accounts of English philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke we must take into consideration a number of things such as the age in which they lived and the time in which they produced their philosophical writings. We will however find out that these two philosophers actually have a couple of things in which agree on even though most of their opinions clash. On one side we have Thomas Hobbes who lived in the time of the English Civil War (1642-1651) who provides a negative framework for his philosophical opinions in his masterpiece Leviathan and who advocates for philosophical absolutism . On the other side we have John Locke, living during the glorious revolution (1688-1689) he presents a positive attitude in his book The Second Treatise of Government and advocates for philosophical and biblical constitutionalism. It is important that we know that the state of nature describes a pre- political society prior to the social contract.
Hobbes viewed state of nature as a state of war. According to Hobbes, in a state of nature, there is no right to property because no one affords another that right. He stated that property and possessions would inevitably cause men to become enemies. Hobbes believes that people have equal physical and mental ability to harm, and that people will do so for three reasons - competition, difference, and glory. " so that in the state of nature of man, we find three principal causes of quarrel, first, competition; secondly, difference; thirdly, glory" (Hobbes 2008, p.85).
Hobbes and Rousseau both wrote a vast number of articles on the idea of human nature and the true behaviors of humans with no influence of society. No one can truly know what the true nature of a human is, due to the fact that all of our history is written from a civilized time, and we make inferences about our history. Rousseau and Hobbes both try to infer based upon their philosophical view points about the human mind. Rousseau believes that humans in the natural state are more similar to animals, than other man. While Hobbes believes that humans in their natural state are evil because they don’t know “good”, and their innate behavior is war.
