Olds uses imagery and tone to contrast between each poem. The second poem’s tone is more fearful versus the first poem’s tone which is more reserved as the speakers says “we are stuck on opposite sides of the car, which shows speaker is reserved and wants no interactions with this man across. The speaker in the second poem you can tell is fearful by stating “he could take my coat so easily, my briefcase, my life,” this person you can tell is terrified or fearful for their own safety and well being.
