Lorraine Hansberry and Arthur Miller are both remarkable authors who wrote similar plays. They both wrote about the same main idea which is the American dream. Hansberry wrote A Raisin in the Sun, which follows the life of a poor family and a son who wants to do anything he can to get out of poverty. Miller wrote Death of a Salesman, a play about a man’s journey to achieve the American dream. Both plays have main characters that are so driven by money alone. Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman and Walter Younger from A Raisin in the Sun are very similar. They both have wives that are so supportive of them, want to be the dominate figure in their households, and achieve the American dream. Even though he is hateful to his mom and wife at the beginning of the play, these women kept on giving him unconditional love. Walter could not accept the fact that his family was in poverty and would do anything he could to get money. He created this plan with his companions to make a liquor store and he hoped to make a lot of money from it. When his father passed away, his mom received his insurance money and he hoped to get a lot of it so he could put in his share of money. When his mom gave money to him and told him to put in some money for his sister, his dream took over his intelligence and he gave all of the money to one of his companions. Little did Walter know that he was in a middle of a scam and he lost every little bit of the money, which led to long-awaiting consequences.
