Similarities Between Willy Loman And Jay Gatsby

916 Words4 Pages

How long does it take for reality to set in?

Some of us appear to have it all together, but do we really?

It seems as characters such as Jay Gatsby, Willy Loman, and Billy Bibbit all had a different understanding reality.

Jay Gatsby may have or have not died with the understanding of reality.
Willy Loman died with the realism of his sons’ love.
Billy Bibbit died when he realized how his actions could affect those closest to him.

Though Willy and Billy died almost immediately after realization, there was some time in between for Gatsby. Willy and Billy had both caused their own death, while Gatsby was murdered for not realizing the realism of his situation.

Willy Loman. Your typical want-to-be-the-good-father workaholic. Growing up without a father or father figure, Willy was left alone in confusion in how to raise his kids. The mystery of what a father and son relationship should be flustered his mind. Causing him to eventually lose sense of himself. Loman lived his life in his mind and shut out those he loved, which led to his predicted yet unanticipated death.

We all feel the pressure to be someone better, or different. Whether it is coming from friends, family, or even the stranger sitting next to us on the subway. Most of the time, this pressure seems to be an imagined force compelling me to behave in a certain way, and suddenly makes me become conscious of my opinions. At times, I feel as though I am no longer myself, but someone else’s portrayal of me.

Willy’s mental state was a gradual downfall from hiding for too long. His family realized his longing for death but was unsure how to help. Willy fell into the comfort of shielding his thoughts from his family and ignoring his issues, which lead to his depressed life.

I am not living a depressed life, I am just stuck in a loop.
