George Saunders’ speech to the graduating Syracuse class of 2013 emphasized the message of being kind to one another. He made a point of his own personal experience saying that one thing he regrets is not being kinder to a young girl who was picked on for her habits. This story leads into Saunders’ message about being more mindful of others and their feelings. Saunders’ message to the students who are just about to entire the “real world” is to introduce kindness and compassion. He believed that while mankind is born with a sense of selfishness and the notion the we individually are the center of the universe kindness can change that.
In 2013, when Professor George Saunders delivered his commencement speech at Syracuse University he had one goal in mind, to inspire. Saunders didn’t want to get up in front of the audience and give a long boring speech, but instead he wanted to speak of useful information that graduates would remember for the rest of their lives. He wanted to use his time to teach the audience about the importance of spreading love and kindness. Saunders accurately argues in his speech that our society suffers from selfishness and the obsession of succeeding; he uses personal stories, questions/answer appeals and informal diction to help inform that if we allow ourselves to be cured of these illnesses we can open the door to all the love and kindness we have to offer.
To Be Kind In preschool, and throughout elementary school, I had always been taught that “if [I] didn’t have anything nice to say, then [not to] say anything at all.” This phrase is something that I, and all of my peers, have heard essentially my entire life. Preschool and kindergarten are the grades in which students learn basic manners and skills that they will use as they grow older and become an adult. Teachers believe that they are teaching their students to be nice, however, I see it more as being taught to be tolerant of others.
Poetry is an effective means used to convey a variety of emotions, from grief, to love, to empathy. This form of text relies heavily on imagery and comparison to inflict the reader with the associated feelings. As such, is displayed within Stephen Dunn 's, aptly named poem, Empathy. Quite ironically, Dunn implores strong diction to string along his cohesive plot of a man seeing the world in an emphatic light. The text starts off by establishing the military background of the main protagonist, as he awaits a call from his lover in a hotel room.
The dictionary describes empathy as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. But, you can’t look up how to feel empathy for someone. I believe that your experiences in life determine that. In To Kill a Mockingbird, (TKM), The kids, Scout and Jem each learn empathy through the events in the story. In the beginning, Atticus teaches them what the definition of empathy is, but they do not feel it until later in the book.

Living in a modern world many people get well educated and are making good changes in the world. But are we forgetting something in our busy society? This essay will focus on the style of Saunders’ language and on the values he advocates in his speech.
It is what makes people want to live another day. Empathizing with another person may be challenging, but it will make a tremendous difference in the end. Empathy, a most basic human quality, but how many can define it. Empathy according to the Oxford Canadian dictionary empathy is the power of identifying oneself mentally with (and so fully comprehending) a person or object of contemplation, but what does this mean? In simpler terms empathy is the ability to share the thoughts and feelings of another being or object. If that's the definition where can we find examples of this trait that has long been forgotten by society? In Harper Lee’s award winning novel To Kill A Mockingbird, a tale about friendship, loyalty, loss, and perhaps most importantly a story about empathy.
Although mike does not show empathy for others, he does show empathy but he applies it to himself. Throughout Mike’s life course, he had someone caring for him; therefore, he never cared for someone that depends on him creating an emotional bond enhancing feelings for the relationship. Behavioral Perspective (2017) “Behaviorism is the theoretical perspective in which learning and behavior are described and explained in terms of stimulus-response relationships.” As a counselor, I acknowledge that his behavior to be self-centered; thus, Mike has to be given the caretaking role to reverse his behavioral ideology.
