Summary In this memo, I will first give a general overview of two pieces of technical writing: introductory websites for the games Magic: the Gathering (MTG) and Overwatch. I’ll point out pieces of each that represent important facets of professional and technical writing (PTW), taking note of their similarities and differences. I then aim show how Overwatch’s website is a better piece of PTW, doing a better job of informing its readers and appealing to them. Its highly-visual nature is compelling; as an introduction to the game, its conciseness is relieving to new players. The MTG subsections are all left-aligned paragraphs with a picture in close proximity, while Overwatch has a mix of center- and left-aligned paragraphs to present large amounts of information. Each section’s background is drastically different from the previous one, creating an interesting variety and well-demonstrated contrast for each part. The website possesses other sections for more in-depth strategy, and some of the subsections for specific card types could have been moved there for greater conciseness; while some new players would want as much strategy as possible, I feel as though this website could trim some specifics and still give a good overview. Overwatch, on the other hand, has a very straight-forward description that still gives you a strong foundation to begin playing immediately after. While the game has over twenty unique characters to choose from, the guide instead opts to describe their four major archetypes; simplifying this part of the introduction makes the site much easier to read.
