Home Depot and Lowe’s are two of the largest competitors in the home improvement market. When comparing the two, they both operate under very similar business models targeting the DIY and professional markets, but there are differences in their strategies which provides them both success within this industry. One specific area is in market saturation which Home Depot is ahead of Lowe’s. Home Depot has moved into the global market with stores in the U.S. Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Canada, Mexico and China, many of which Lowe’s have not infiltrated. Other areas where the two companies differ are in customer options and store layouts.

The United States’ markets are filled with imported goods from around the world. I normally buy products from Target and Wal-Mart. I don’t pay attention where they are made. However, for this assignment, I checked the origin of the products that I bought at Target and Wal-Mart. The items are made in China.

Many people actually live pretty close to their favorite stores, since there little distance between them and the store. Even if one store closed when living in New York people don’t really have to worry about finding a store. The Internet era creates a way for customers to shop online with a verity of sections more than ever before. As business owners, searching for solutions to win over online shoppers is not an easy task. Brick-and-mortar bookstores are hit hardest by the online stores like Amazon, eBay..etc. When the time goes by, people were convinced that online bookstore were the death of brick-and-mortar bookstores.
For this activity, my group observed the malls Carrboro Plaza and Streets at Southpoint, and from my analysis it seems like both malls have at least partially established themselves as ‘cathedrals of consumption’ as described by Ritzer in Enchanting a Disenchanted World. The Streets at Southpoint have a lot more of the characteristics of a cathedral of consumption, and this difference is logical, as these two malls have a different demographic they are trying to target. The clientele of each mall differs in what social class they belong to, which in turn limits the extent to which the consumers are able to experience the enchantment of this modern consumerism culture. Carrboro Plaza is a lower end, open-air complex with around twenty stores.
