John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men tells the story of George and Lennie, two hard working farm workers in the south of California who seek to find enough work to someday buy their own land and home. On their path to fulfilling their dreams Lennie and George run into other dreamers who also want to exit their cruel life and do something better with it. However, Of Mice and Men makes the world seem like a cruel place where dreams are unable come true making it harder for these characters to escape their stressful lives and accomplish much more.

Although Lennie's personality is somewhat identical to an eight year olds he also shares goals for himself that he expects to happen eventually. Lennie loved to hear stories of what himself and George would do with their lives. It can be argued that Lennie and George had identical wishes for themselves in the future. However, it can be noted that Lennie also wanted much more than just that. The author does not necessarily depict this in the story, but you can infer that Lennie's real dream is to feel responsible and for others to feel that he is responsible. Lennie wishes to be a part of something that George and the others believe and trust that he can do. I the novel Lennie states,” "An' live off the fatta the lan'," Lennie shouted. "An' have rabbits. Go on, George! Tell about what we're gonna have in the garden and about the rabbits”. In the story Lennie consistently brings up rabbits and his desire to tend them. Unfortunately, his dreams are crushed when he hurts Curley's wife accidentally snapping her neck. His dream of tending the rabbits and responsibility diminished when George is forced to put him to sleep. Lennie was only trying to do the right thing or what he believes was the right thing.
