MLL and NLL Salaries; What's up Lacrosse!? A Research Paper by Christian Stalker Lacrosse is a widely growing sport, with an increasing fan-base, and recognizable names and figures. But you as a reader may be asking yourself, "If this has such a large fan base why do I never see it on TV", and the answer to that question is simple: There is no money in lacrosse as a professional sport. This is surprising, considering that modern day lacrosse is made up of fairly well off families. Some of the best schools in the country, such as John Hopkins, sport some of the best lacrosse teams. I want to delve deeper, and here are my findings. The first thing I'm going to identify is TV coverage. No sport can survive without some sort of TV coverage, look at the X-Games, skateboarding was not a mainstream thing before X-Games was broadcasted on television. The reason this is important to salaries is because the success of the league impacts earnings, therefore impacting salaries. Coaches run a loose offense in the MLL to creat a more free flowing game, but it's not just for that reason. "...Most MLL teams are only able to practice once a week – and at times, many of the players aren’t even able to make the practice" (laxallstars.com), this affects the team chemistry. Team chemistry is how closely knit a team is and how well they play together. With so many new names every year in the MLL, it takes a while for the teams to really "warm up". On top of this MLL drafting picks sometimes won't even be able to come up until halfway through the season, this is because the NCAA tournament cuts into the beginning of MLL's season. This can make sense as to how it affects their salaries because not much is asked of these players, via how well they play as a team, or what formations and plays they have to
