Really, come to think about our world where everyone including government, companies, even doctors are all about money. How on earth would the government allow the misleading advertisements so fancifully and deceptively dressed up as normal? This rational for a child is to say, “Okay, it would not be so popular if it contained toxic”. Obviously, to me, it was a good thing to desire to beautify and enhance my beauty. Nobody used the word “false” perception of beauty. It seemed okay and acceptable! My idea to tone and enhance my skin beauty was heavily influenced by images seen in the media and in the community, as well as my experience growing up as a child. And, it was definitely stimulated by the cosmetic industry via advertisements, which often connected happiness, success, acceptance, romance, and socioeconomic status with fairer and more vibrant skin tones. Again, it was the perceived notion of your love for your skin color. The perceived notion was that because you really love your skin, it was acceptable to enhance it. Remember, it was sought after because of the perception of the images portrayed. They were attractive images that were connected with beauty and success. Who in their right mind would not want that? Unless you were not smart enough to do something good for yourself or you just could not afford it; or you were just ignorant, “not in”; or you just do not know how to….just like most people do not know how to apply make-up properly or afford to relax their hair. Or, you may just simply choose to not do something about how your skin or hair looks. Either way, it was your choice and that was okay, as well as acceptable.
