The movie version of The Great Gatsby by Coppula is far less detailed than the book by Fitzgerald. In the first party that was thrown by Gatsby in chapter 3, many details were left out of the movie. These details were both minor and major, and left either a little or big difference o in the way the story was conveyed. The scene where Gatsby meets Nick for the first time is very different in the movie than in the book. Despite the differences that are displayed in the movie, the general plot and atmosphere of the party remain the same. In the book, Owl Eyes makes his appearance when Nick and Jordan stumble across the library while searching for Gatsby. Owl Eyes is extremely captivated by the books and talks about how real they are. Although it is a short scene, this scene is nonexistent in the movie. In the book version of The Great Gatsby, there are also some exchanged lines between Jordan and two girls in yellow dresses. Although the girls in the yellow dresses are included in the movie, they do not interact with Jordan in any way. Other minor details that are left out of the movie include the girl crying at the end of the movie, Nick going around and searching for Gatsby at the beginning of the party, and the orchestra playing a song for Gatsby at the end of the novel. Another small detail that is included in the movie, but not in the book, is a small scene where it starts to rain, and the party moves inside. The atmosphere of the party is very similar in both the book and the movie. The party includes food, drink, dancing, an orchestra, and lots of people. They both display very wealthy people described or shown in elaborate clothing, most of whom are consuming alcohol illegally. There are some details that are the same in both the book and the movie. Nick is seen in both the book and in the movie as lost and awkward because he does not know anybody, but eventually he finds Jordan. At the party, there are also many rumors about Gatsby, such as he killed a man or he was a spy. Despite these similarities, there are far more differences in the details of the book and the movie. These differences are very important to the way that the plot is conveyed. By not including the character of Owl Eyes, individuals do not get to see him attend Gatsby’s funeral. People who watch the movie also do not realize that Gatsby recognized Nick from the war.
