Because of the Reformation, many religious wars were occurring, and monarchs like Philip II “… believed that it was his duty to defend Catholicism against the Muslims of the Ottoman Empire and the Protestants of Europe.” (Pg. 591) Philosopher Voltaire argued for many freedoms. Many of them included the freedom of religion, he said, “… Christians should tolerate each other” (Doc 7). He also fought for other rights as well, Voltaire also fought for freedom of speech and press.
Voltaire was a man who wanted freedom of religion during 1726 (18th century) in Paris, France. He wanted this because he believed that freedom of religion would bring the world peace. Adam Smith was another man who believed of freedom, but he mostly believed in the freedom of economy. He did this during 1776 (18th century) in Europe. He thought this because he believed everyone should have the right to do what they want with their earnings that they made.

This ideal society is also possible in other countries that do not have as much freedom legally as well by having leaders of countries that have freedom speak with the leaders of countries that do not have as much freedom, since exposure to foreign cultures increases the possibility of tolerance.
