They should be good communicators, and actually listen to their patients, or families concerns, empathize, and provide clear concise information. An important value a healthcare worker should also embody is altruism. Nurses and medical professionals need prioritize their patients’ needs, without any regard for rewards or benefits. A persons’ health and welfare needs to be priority to a nurse, no matter what the situation. Josie’s Story highlighted the importance of altruism, and the need for nurses and doctors to take a step back and truly listen.
It requires long hours at work and has tons of responsibilities. However, a certified nursing assistant has one of the greatest rewards when it comes to job fulfillment. The ability and opportunity to help other people who are in need of medical attention and are not able to care for themselves is a huge motivation. Being compassionate towards other people is one of the values CNAs need to have. Understanding your patient’s situation and having empathy towards them will help you get through the tough days.
It is hard to be compassionate to those patients. The best part is when you see a patient go from not being able to walk, talk and eat to being able to do all of that and more. In the medical field, RNs need to have specific character traits and personal qualities to allow themselves to be successful. According to the Simmers DHO Human Science textbook, some of these traits and qualities would include, being able to be depended on, having lots of enthusiasm, being extremely responsible, being honest, having patience, tact, and self motivation. My character traits and personal qualities closely align with this career. This means that I will have a higher rate in being successful. More specifically, I feel as though I am easily able to brighten people’s day with my skills of tact and the personality trait of being enthusiastic.

This philosophy reflects the lesson in Matthew 7:12, which states, “ So everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”. I personally value the characteristic of kindness, which encompasses active listening, professionalism, and accountability. In order to be kind, nurses must actively invest time in their patients and express to them that they care for them and their family members. My belief is that if my family member was in the hospital I would want the nurse to show kindness to them, therefore I will show compassion to others family members. I value the art of kindness, because sometimes it is not easy to show love to patients who are combative or disrespectful.
Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
The professional nursing values I believe are things you can be taught and some you cannot. Nurses are special individuals who ultimately want to care for and help others as much as they can. I agree with all of these values and believe some I will need to work on myself such as competence, illness prevention and patient education. Others I believe I have based on my experience I have already had while caring for others. Some of the qualities I believe I have include: caring, compassion, dependability, empathy, focusing on the patient- defining quality of life, having a holistic patient centered care, kindness, openness to learning, respect for others their dignity and worth and sensitivity.
Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. Nurses are expected to be more than just a nurse, but rather an advocate, caregiver, support system and professional.
According to my preceptor last semester I demonstrates a sound understanding of self-care, self-reflection and work life balance. I also have an “understanding of the components of the nurse patient relationship, by maintaining an open and professional relationship with the patients.” I am also “demonstrated self-direction and initiative” (B. The altruistic behaviour of healthcare practitioners may include consistent work or the providence of informal medical advice beyond the boundaries of contracted hours along with the general willingness to move beyond the additional miles in professional activities. Being messenger of Good Faith is a characteristic that I found very appealing. This is the kind of nurse I hope to be. I want to be there for my patients with my faith during the hardest times. Also I want to help them understands that God is wonderful and he is always present among us.

I personally feel when working with someone, you grow a tight bond that you nor your patient will ever forget. You’re the person who comes in that room every day, administer their medicine, and gives them the comfort they need. Their lives are in your hands, so make every word and action count because you never know when their last breath will be. Being a nurse is very challenging and comes with everyday obstacles.
