What compels people to talk during a movie? Going to the movies with friends and family is a favorite free time activity of mine. Just this weekend, as I sat in the not so comfortable seat movie theaters have to offer, I enjoyed a showing of the movie Dunkirk. Once in a while, I found myself uttering comments to myself about the plot. Even though I have a tendency to talk to myself and ask questions about the movie, I know there is a limit to how loud my commentary is. But, once these remarks are loud enough for the theater and the theater next door can hear, a big problem arises. Some theaters have ushers to escort noisy moviegoers out but some don't have anyone at all to fix the problem. We sat in the highest row with our snacks and drinks. Once the movie started, everyone was quiet and paying attention to the film until the action started. I could hear my friend Elaine next to me quietly asking herself questions about the movie and making comments. Ignoring her, I continued to watch the film and keep to myself. The theater was empty, besides the couple sitting down below us. Thirty minutes in, I continued to eat my snacks but noticed my friend's narration growing louder as the action became more intense. She constantly turned to me and asked, "Who died?!" or would shout her favorite profanity, "OH SHIT!". I quietly leaned over to her and whispered, "Hush! You're talking way too much." because I knew that my other friends and I were not peacefully enjoying the movie. That tactic worked for a while until the climax of the show. Friends next to me would ask her to pipe down but no matter how much we asked her to be quiet, she continued to talk.
