Get Out (2017) is a horror film directed and written by Jordan Peele. The film is about a black male named Chris, performed by Daniel Kaluuya, who is going out of town with his girlfriend Rose, performed by Allison Williams. The purpose of this trip is to meet her parents for the first time at their estate located deep into the woods. Little does Chris know Rose’s parents do not really care to meet him but are more interested in auctioning off his body. Chris figures this out towards the end of the film and he barley figures out a way to escape. The dimly lit basement deep in the woods, being far from civilization to get help, and where he is being held is symbolic of the plantations slaves would have been trapped. Chris is symbolic of a slave because he is being held against his own free will and about to have his very own body exploited because of his physical attributes. This is just like how slaves would have been forced to do manual labor and were also selected or bought due to their physical attributes to do so. The Armitage family is used to symbolize slave owners. Their house resembles modern-day America where most of it is modern and progressive, but some of it is still old like some people's morals and values. There are many examples that take place today such a police brutality. Some police officers are racist, abuse their power, and target people based on their race. There is also examples of racism in ads. An example of this is a recent h&m advertisement. However, it is not all bad, just like in the movie. Chris escapes and it shows things do get better. America has come a long way from having slaves and segregation but the point of the movie is to show that we have not come far enough yet and that their is always room for improvement in our
