To most people, talking in front of crowd can be very intimidating; however, some students choose to use their time outside of class to practice and perform speeches competitively. There are many great extra-curricular activities at Western, and one of these excellent programs is Competitive Speech. Often times sports are given the spotlight at Western, but the number of students participating in Competitive Speech keeps increasing and more people are taking an interest in this beneficial activity. Some reasons why the number of participants is increasing could be because of the many advantages of practicing public speaking, or it could be due to the brownies made by Western’s speech coach, Mrs. Christians. Speech is very helpful in teaching kids how to act when they are in front of a crowd. By allowing the kids a safe environment to practice speaking, singing, or acting in front of other people, their confidence increases. The ability to speak in front of a crowd is a very important and useful life skill. Some of the categories require kids to know about current events and students can learn new things by listening to other speeches. In other categories, students must write their own speeches. This helps the student not only become a better writer, but also teaches them how to write an effective speech. Another thing Competitive Speech teaches participants is listening skills. During other students’ speeches, listeners are expected to be respectful, quiet and attentive. Being a good listener is very important and does not always happen in now days. Learning and practicing all of these skills is just one more great benefit that Speech provides for students who participate in
