Concussions have led to the end of many players football careers and in some cases, their lives. People that are in college and the NFL continue, playing even though they are risking their lives just for a little fame. Today football players play the game to make money and just because of their love for the sport.

Concussions in Sports In sports, concussions occur frequently across all age groups. From little leagues to high school sports to the professional leagues, concussions pose a high risk of long term Traumatic brain injuries. The main change that could easily be made to help with the problem is to better the quality of the helmets used in the sport. It would not be too hard because new helmets are already being made just for the concussion cases. After this, changes could be made to the sport for safety. There will always be some dangers in the sport because it is a very high contact sport. “Despite the best efforts of the leagues, the players, and the medical and engineering communities, the incidence of injury at all levels of the game continues to increase” (Solving football’s).
When student athletes participate in contact sports, they run the risk of getting a concussion. A concussion, according to The American Academy of Neurology, is defined as "A trauma induced alteration in mental statues that may or may not result in loss of consciousness". Short term effects could cause a change in mood, along with headaches and nausea; whereas long term effects of a concussion can range from drastic behavioral changes and mood disturbances to cognitive difficulties. These symptoms are very prevalent in student athletes that may get a concussion and can only get worse when one has been re-concussed. I believe that student athletes should be required to sit out for a longer period of time following the events of a concussion.
Each year high school athletes suffer from concussions more frequently. In the article, “After a Concussion it’s Unclear When -or if- High School Athletes Should Return to Action,” by Sam McDowell, this issue is addressed. Concussions are becoming a very common injury in sports. 244 People got a concussion in the NFL in the 2016 season. That number is down compared to 275 in 2015 but up from 206 in 2014 and 229 in 2013. I still believe we could get those numbers down even more. If we have the best helmets possible and teach everybody how to tackle right from the beginning we will have very few concussions.
This is one of the biggest advancements in helmet technology or one of the worst ones. In one perspective they provided more padding and protection for the football player. On the other hand it gave the players the ability to use it as a weapon on the field and gave them the confidence to hit other players with their head, where before they were scared to use their head. Once players found out they could use their heads they began to use it more often and in some instances these hits left players unconscious and concussed. Concussions are a bad deal in any sport and if a player is concussed and doesn 't say anything and gets another one it can lead to permanent or long term brain damage or in the most severe cases even

In April of my freshman year I hit my head on a truck while there was construction taking place at my school. I had a concussion which consisted of intense headaches until the middle of June. A few months later, while I was marching band practice I passed out and had another concussion. The headaches returned, but this time they got progressively worse and lasted for months. It was nearly impossible to do homework so school became hard.
Did you know that nearly 0.41 concussions occur per NFL game? All of these occur from contact, hence calling the game a contact sport or even a collision sport. Contact sports can be extremely dangerous, not only for kids but for all ages. According to the CDC, around 1.6 to 1.8 million sports-related concussions occur each year, with about 1.1 million concussions taking place in children below the age of 18. Contact sports are worth the risk of injury, though, due to the fact that these sports teach valuable character traits and impact school performance.
