The funeral that took place in the Aeneid written by Virgil is closely related to funerals that take place in modern times. Although they are closely related, there are some differences between the two, but mostly they seem to be the same. Each culture has its own way of conducting funerals, but Aeneas’ method is like New Orleans, which is a city located in Louisiana, United States, and a tradition known as Da De Los Muertos or the day of the dead, which is celebrated by people of Latino background. The people of New Orleans call their funerals “Jazz Funerals” because of the brass band that plays jazz music throughout the service (The Jazz Funeral | New Orleans). The music starts off slow and sad, but then the band changes the tempo of the music, and it becomes up tempo, for the Mourners begin to dance the music in celebration (The Jazz Funeral | New Orleans). For Aeneas, instead of playing music and dancing, he decided to hold games, where the winner is eligible for prizes, to celebrate his father’s life (Virgil, Aeneid 5.). Death is a sad thing, but in both instances, they find a way to make it joyful and to celebrate and not mourn. Beyond the comparison of funeral traditions, Aeneas, the Day of the Dead, and Jazz Funerals or New Orleans believe that there is life after death and that the spirits will continue to live beyond their deaths. During the day of the dead, they leave a trail of a flower called marigolds as a pathway for the deceased to find their way home and they use bright colors to decorate everything because they believe that they will see the colors and come home. In New Orleans, they strongly believe that death does not stop after their life has ended.
