They felt secure that the Confederacy soldiers had the benefit of prepared troops. Those who were raised in the South had the opportunity to learn skills with guns and riding horses, which prepared them for battle. Whereas the Union troops were industrial workers whom had not been prepared. They assumed that since the Union were conquering land they had to leave soldiers behind at some point to protect the land conquest. In which the Confederacy believed it was reasonable to wait, until the North became vulnerable and surrender.
Southern soldiers viewed the confederacy as their country and were compelled to fight for the safety of it. Confederate soldiers enlisted to protecting their native lands from what they understood as invaders. The Confederacy sentiments of the Union was they were imposing upon the southern way of life. For instance, a young soldier from Kentucky wrote “sink or swim, survive or perish” (McPherson 11). The average Confederate soldier felt that they the Union was trying to destroy the legacy of the founder fathers by enslaving them and reversing the actions of the American Revolution.
The confederacy got rid of their fiscal matters throughout the war through donations from people (voluntary), imposing taxes on many things, appropriation of northern owned properties in the south, distribution of government debt and printing of confederate dollars. The union had a lot more men who could be enlisted to the army where the confederacy didn’t have as much. The numbers of the
The South on the other hand , had less men and guns and ammo in fact there were 22 million people North and only 9 million South and out of that 9 million only 5.5 were white . One main reason the Civil War broke out was that the North and South states couldn’t agree on slavery . The South did want slavery , but the North did not . In total 620,000 died in the Civil War in four years that’s how many people died . Many African
Nationalism was a big factor, both Union like Confederate soldiers believed in making their fellow founding fathers proud of what they had become. The book portrays the Confederate soldiers as proud of being “rebels”, quoting names like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson as examples of “rebellious” men in their time period. The Unionists stuck to their idealism of preserving the union, making nationalism more prominent in their area. Both sides also appealed to what the United States was founded on, freedom and liberty. The Unionists believed that they should conserve the government which granted everyone liberty.
Union and Confederate soldiers both had different reasons related to why they were fighting for their particular side. At the beginning of war, Union soldiers primary believed that they were mainly fighting so that the Union could be preserved. Later, some individuals would realize was way more important than the cause of preserving the Union. The Union soldiers were now thinking of fighting to permanently end slavery in the country. The Confederate soldiers believed that they were fighting for primarily two reasons.
As the Civil War began each both sides possessed significant strengths and weaknesses. The Union with a population of 22 million,
The Union had just about every edge over their counterparts and interestingly, held population and industrialization advantages. This would enable them to produce more goods such as weapons or other highly demanded industrialization driven products. The Civil War was also driven by major gains in technology; the introduction of non-wooden ships or ironclads, railroads, grenades and trench warfare with long rang rifles introduced an unorthodox, but new way to edge competition. Another edge in mobilization that the Union had was the lack dependency on importing goods. The cotton driven south would attempt to accommodate Union efforts to blockade goods by transitioning to nontraditional crops.
Similar to many quarrels dating back before it could even be recorded, a clash of beliefs resulted in the beginning of a war that would recreate the very nation built on the freedom and rights of those who inhabit it. This rather large and groundbreaking ordeal began April 12th of 1861 at the very beginning of the Civil War. A nation had been split in two by conflicted views that would forever hold a place in the descendants of those who fought. These two sides were titled Union and Confederate, two names that would separate like oil and water way beyond their reign. Though they share similarities within flags summarized as a sign of freedom and the fight for what they believed in, it was their convictions that separated one from the other.
The North had many advantages. They beat the South in population they could draw soldiers from. The North had 22 million citizens where the South only had 5.5 million citizens. The North could transport supplies and people faster because of their roads, canals, and railroads. However the South disconnected from itself with barely any railroads and hard to move soldiers and goods from place to place.
The Confederates strategy was a defensive attack, whereas the Union's strategy was an offensive attack. The Confederates had the idea that if they drew out the conflict long enough, they would be capable of convincing the Union that it was going to be too costly to support. The one downfall of the Confederates was that they had less men, less industrial capacity and less capital support then the Union. They attempted to convince England and France that victory for them would be greater than a victory for the Union. The Union strategy however was to fight and win an offensive war.
The Union had more fire power that overwhelmed the Confederates. These improvements on these weapons included the repeating rifle that allowed several shots to be fired before reloading when the Confederate side had guns that had to be reloaded after every shot. Also the gatlin gun was a big help. The gatlin gun was basically a machine gun. Iron gunships were fully metal hull reinforced ships that were loaded with cannons all along the side.
The uncompromising difference between the North and the South had steered them to have the bloodiest conflict in its history. This barely starts with the confusion of who was in charge of the army. It started when one side felt the need to become more powerful than the other side. Both sides obtained opposing views on the idea of slavery that caused many tensions between them. The Confederacy had slaves who were one-third of their population, while the Union had very little slaves and didn’t support the idea of slavery.
What I think is that this story talks about the USA or the Union and the Confederacy, in the part that I am they are talking by the differences, the Union is the North, and the Confederacy is the South part, the Union of the North part is the one with 23 states and more population of course, the Confederacy has just 11 states but they have a lot of slaves all about them is in the picture bellow. Other thing about this story is that in 1860 the elected president was Abraham Lincoln; moreover to be a president he was trying to resolve the fight between the Union and the Confederacy. Even before the late 1800s, the US had begun to grow and change. The economy of the US grew as factories in the economy.
The Union had more railroad lines and they had the telegraph system. The telegraph system was a huge advantage for the Union because they could now send messages thousands of miles away in less than a minute. President Abraham Lincoln could now command the Union’s generals in the safety of his own office. The railroad lines gave the Union a big advantage because they could transport resources faster than the Confederate
