Constitution DBQ What is tyranny and how do you guard against it? Tyranny is most often defined as harsh, absolute power in the hands of one individual - like a king or a dictator. The constitution was created May of 1787, in Philadelphia. “The accumulation of all powers … in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many (is) the very definition of tyranny.” It was made to replace the old constitution, the Articles of Confederation (Background Essay).
Canada was not always as large of a country as it is now. It started with just two parts, the West and the East. Have you ever wondered how it all started or who was the first prime minister of the country? Perhaps you were wondering what colonies did not want to join the confederation.
This is because Shays rebellion took place because the poor farmers were fighting against the outrageous taxes which were leaving them without land and in prison with no means of supplying food for their families. In many states at the time if someone didn't have land they weren't able to vote because in the governments eyes they had no power. These taxes were taking away the farmers land which then also took away their right to vote which left them powerless and made their options pointless. Poor farmers ended up in jail which left their families out on the streets begging for money and a means to survive. Just like the whiskey rebellion farmers were left without a way to supply for their family because the demand of whiskey was way down after the government increase the tax by 25%.
The Articles of Confederation structured the first government of the thirteen states. The thirteen states included: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Rhode Island. However, Rhode Island did not vote to revise the Articles right away. Therefore, the proposals of the Constitution continued to be declined by the other states due to not having a balance on votes. When Rhode Island finally sent a representative to the Constitution Convention, the Constitution was approved.
As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.

Believe it or not, the Constitution was not America 's first form of government. Our country started out with the Articles of Confederation, which were...shall we say... less than perfect. They gave the states much more power than the central government, due to a pervasive fear of strong central governments. This fear stemmed from the reign of the tyrannical King George III, and the founding fathers did not want to give their country the ability to establish another monarchy. In the Articles of Confederation, the central government had no power to tax, regulate trade or commerce, enforce laws, settle disputes between states.
The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
Yukon joined the Confederation in 1898 after a gold rush movement boomed. The Canadian government named a second northern territory "Yukon" to show Canada controlled the territory. Saskatchewan also joined the Confederation in the same year with Alberta. Saskatchewan and Alberta was originally planning to unite as one province. However, members of the Confederation considered it was too large for a government to administer.
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.
The actions of the members of Shay’s Rebellion went too far. Even though they were angry. They started an uprise because they were getting treated unfairly. On page 195 of the textbook it states, “American farmers suffered because they could not sell their goods.” Since they could not sell their goods, they didn’t have a way to earn money.
To do this, Massachusetts put heavier taxes on the yeoman farmers, who all became indebted. When the farmers could not pay the government seized their farms, land, any animals, their houses, and even sometimes their wives. Despite the state government taking all of the farmer’s property and supplies, the farmer was still expected to pay the taxes. To stop the foreclosures, a group of yeoman farmers took up arms and closed the courts to ensure that no more farms could be foreclosed. This rebellion, Shay’s Rebellion, was led by Danielle Shay, who himself was an indebted farmer.
Some of the first governments in the United states were led by state constitutions, while they were all unique and had some difference there where several parts that many of these constitution agreed upon. These similarities and ideas that the states all agreed on where some of the most important pieces of early national government. The idea of popular sovereignty, natural rights and a division of power where three pieces that many different early constitutions and governments in the United States agreed upon. However there was more than just a new State government in the making as time moved forward the United States began form many different National governments. In the early government there was only the congress and no other branches of
First off I would like to say good morning gentlemen. (As the other delegates said) (In my opinion) joining confederation can solve many of our issues such as our plummeting economy, defence, political issues and building the Intercolonial railway. By joining confederation we could divide the amount of money required to be paid in order to finishing building the Intercolonial railway. By spreading the cost evenly amongst the colonies, the Intercolonial railway to be paid for and begin to operate.
Factors that lead up to confederation was that firstly, Newfoundland had feared that the French wouldn’t only use Newfoundland fish station, in contrast to something more. Which is why they wanted to be a part of the union thus, they could be protected. Additionally, another factor that leads up to confederation was the Fenian Raids joined as one because the Fenians were raiding each colony of BNA, hence, they come together to become a stronger force of defense. Moreover, intercolonial trade lead to unionize as the price from BNA were very cheap but then started to become expensive as a result united because they wanted to combine their resources in order to grow their economy and to also to consider that they couldn’t always rely on Britain
