One of the biggest factors of Confederation was The Railway. A railway was needed for several reasons. With poor infrastructure aside from rivers which froze over in the winter the merchants needed a way to transfer their products. Canada was in a depression because of their loss of trade with other countries. The railway would solve the problem of transporting goods and help transport troops for the military.
Answer: The Articles of Confederation was destined to fail because allowing the states to mainly govern themselves left the central government at the mercy of each state. The central government had the power to control the militia but without the power to draft or tax citizens, it left the government with a weak militia and no money to fund it. That allowed the states to mainly look out for the elite, the wealthy and leave the rest to fend for themselves. After all the Articles of Confederation was written by the wealthy white man to prevent a strong central government from ruling over the states after it detached itself from England. In order to give themselves more power they also took away the possibility for commerce between states and
BACKGROUND In the first week we were introduced on the topic of Canadian confederation. What is the Canadian confederation? Well it is the process in which some British North American provinces Ontario, Quebec, Nova scotia and New Brunswick into one federation called the dominion of Canada, in 1867 Canada got confederation as a country but not complete independence since they could not control their own foreign policy it was still in the hands of Britain. There where some provinces in which wanted the confederation and others who did not.
The first government in the U.S. was called the Articles of Confederation. It was the first set of laws after the states became independent. The laws in the Confederation were very weak, and they all contracted each other. It also had a weak central/national government because the states didn’t want to give it too much power like the monarchy with the British. Some weaknesses in the first government were that each state no matter how big or small had only one vote, each state could coin its own money, making it hard to move, and lastly, they could not have a military so it would be hard to fight armed rebellions or militias.
Before the Articles of Confederation and their problems, America was (somewhat) whole. Because of the Articles of Confederation, the population was split into two groups: federalists, and antifederalists, both with differing views. The political, economic, and social views of the nation were quite different. Because of the Articles of Confederation, the Great Compromise was created, and, consequently, Congress was made.
The Articles of Confederation is the first constitution of the United States of America. The constitution was in effect from March 1, 1781 to March 4, 1789, a total of 8 years. The Articles of Confederation gave congress the power to conduct foreign affairs, declare war, regulate the postal service, determine the value of currency, appoint military officers, control Native American affairs, and issue credit. Congress could not regulate trade, raise taxes, enforce duties, draft, and did not have a judicial or executive branches. The Articles of Confederation was not an effective form of government because the government could not repay their debt to the soldiers of the Continental Army or France, Shay’s Rebellion caused havoc in Massachusetts,
Following the Revolutionary War, America had just gained independance from Great Britain and needed to form a new government. The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.
The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
The articles of confederation were not truly democratic because of the leadership and the voting policy. The central authority of a confederation is usually a weak body appointed by the member states who usually will focus on joint foreign policy and defense matters, but rarely will have the power to do much more than that.. Under the Articles of Confederation, the United States was a Confederacy. The whole Government of the United States was vested in one body, The Congress Assembled, no official, no legal. The capacity of law authorization and judging law went by Congress was left to the States.
America was founded as a land of equal opportunity and freedom. Although we eventually gained our independence from England and started to form our democratic country, one of the largest issues in the developing state was power. Land was everything to new comers in america in the 17th and 18th century, because if you posed the land you posed the power and wealth. The entire nation was decided into different colonies because most land owner had subdivided sections and didn't want to give in and band together to form a union. The Articles of Confederation was the first form of constitutionalized doctrine signed by the thirteen original colonies the declared the United States of America as a confederation of sovereign states.
The Untied States put the Articles of Confederation into place on March 1st, 1781, during the Revolutionary War. It was the first form of national government in the U.S. The Articles gave the majority of power to the individual states and limited power to the national government, this power structure was chosen due to the British excessive control on the colonies. Soon it became apparent that the Articles of Confederation was not sufficient means of governing the populace. Therefore in May of 1787, delegates from the thirteen states arrived in Philadelphia to improve the Articles and prevent the country from collapsing.
The United States confronted many problems once they gained their independence from Great Britain. One of the biggest problems was their form of government at that time, which was stated in the Articles of Confederation. This presented many problem to the states, as stated in a document about the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, some of the problems of the Articles of Confederation were the poor international trade, poor foreign relations, weak economy, and Shay’s Rebellion. The people, specifically the Federalists, wanted a new government because of the weakness of the government at that moment. According to many history books, the government also faced financial problems and tried to resolve them by taxing the states, because
Strengthening the American Government During the early years of America, the nation was under the power of the Articles of Confederation. This weak way of leading the nation was unable to control uprisings like Shay’s Rebellion. The government was too weak to take control and tame the rebellion, thus it was decided that the Articles needed to be revised to give the national government more power. At the time the Anti-Federalists feared that the Constitution, which would give more power to the central government, would destroy america, as well as take away rights from the common man.
Although Odysseus has negative traits, Wilson praises Odysseus having a leadership and confident masculinity, as seen through the journeys he went on. For example, when Telemachus is telling the suitors to leave, but instead they mock him and refuse to listen so Odysseus returns as a disguised beggar and tells the suitors: "You suitors who indulge in insolence and evil actions, not in any way honoring the house of godlike Odysseus, you will not get away with this." (Wilson 2 229-232) When Odysseus says, "You suitors who indulge in insolence and evil actions" this shows Odysseus being confident not being afraid of standing up for his son which makes the suitors get humbled. Odysseus disguised himself as a beggar and shows his confidence as the King of Ithaca and waring the suitors that they will face consequences for their disrespect towards Telemachus.
When he was alive, the Captain would always say, “Now, that’s what I call being struck down by the Laws of God and Nature,” when they happened upon mass destruction of this type and magnitude. “That place needed a good douching out,” was what he said when they sailed into Port of Spain, Trinidad, in the Gulf of Paria, and found it destroyed by a hurricane about a year after Thomas began living with him. At the time, Thomas thought Captain Jackson’s views harsh, but not anymore. He now understood why the Captain had said what he said.
