While reading both the Tressie McMillan’s essay “The Logic of Stupid Poor People” and Scott Russell Sanders essay “The Men we Carry in our Mind”, I thought about the social identity (us-them) theory which states that we have all divided the world into an "us" and a "them"; a root for all stereotyping and prejudice present throughout society. The "us" is one's view of an in-group and the "them" are the out-group. When we split society into these two organizations, the in-group begins to discriminate against the out-group leading, inherently, to stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. This is clearly present throughout the two essays in that McMillan was taught that she was part of “them” and in order for her and her family to be more accepted

In the book Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging written by Sebastian Junger he examines and evaluates certain Native American tribes before the colonization of Europeans, however, I believe he romanticizes the portrayal of the life and community within the tribes. He argues there was little to no inner conflict or quarrels within tribes. Junger states within the book in order to live a better life we should go back to our natural state and live a life as though the Native Americans once did. Although, within the tribes’ conflicts would arise, and there were many tensions amongst tribes who were adjacent and near one another. In summary, Junger says they were more ‘brotherly’ towards each other, nonetheless, they were enemies with each other.
Imagine this: you are living in a discriminatory world full of people who do not understand you, and choose to judge you by your differences instead of getting to know you. If you are even the slightest bit different. The slightest distance from ordinary, you are judged. You do not get to fight for them to know you, because as soon as they place stereotypes on you. They decide who you are supposed to be.
Racism, discrimination, hate crimes and oppression are all behaviors that evolve from people of one racial or ethnic group perceiving anyone who does not belong to the group as "other," and, therefore, not worthy of the same human rights. Baldwin (2017) expresses this in a scientific manner by attributing this behavior to group identification, which perceives people who are not included within one's racial group as an "outgroup." The manner in which an outgroup is defined may be common, such as those outgroups based on "race, sex/gender, nationality, or sexual orientation" (Baldwin, 2017). The social ramifications of these behaviors are tragic and devastating, both to individual lives and the country as a whole.
This news story is about a young woman that decided to create a twitter hash tag that is called “Shout Your Abortion”. The purpose of this hash tag was for women to speak out about their abortions because of the pandemonium with Planned Parenthood clinic right now, which is stated in the article that “Congress investigates Planned Parenthood and debates cutting off its funding because of undercover videos showing officials of the group’s discussing providing fetal tissue for research” (Lewin). Not many women speak out about their abortions because some people associate it with murder. It’s thought that if more women that have had abortions speak out it may shine a different light on the negativity abortion is made out to be so funding for Planned Parenthood won’t stop and abortion will stay legal.
The article “Individuality and Conformity:A Healthy Middle?” is about the middle of individuality and conformity and it is based on society. Some people are in the healthy middle and it sets examples about the stuff that goes on with young adults. In addition it talks about the forms of individualities and conformity. It also says that there is a certain amount of people that are in the healthy middle. It also says that the truth is that we 're all humans and that some people pursue similar goals.
Human instincts are behaviors that are genetically wired into us that help us react to our environment, but most of the time they are more hurtful than useful. For example, one of them is to follow and be influenced by our surroundings. Since birth we adjust to what family setting we may have and conform to what we see on the outside.
