Conformity In The Classroom

Conformity is an element that is around whether it goes noticed or not. People conform to circumstances and situations as they come along, sometimes subconsciously. One of the major places conformity takes place especially early on in life is the classroom, which is why I decided to do my experiment in the classroom. I had intentions on doing the experiment in the classroom and going against whatever the unanimous view was, but the opportunity occurred spontaneously. I have always been the type of person that was confident in the decisions that I made so when I went into class on the day the experiment occurred, my mind was clear of any anxiety. They looked at me as if I was crazy and although they did not make any comments, the snickers and stares I received were enough for me to understand the obvious disapproval of my peers. By this time I was nervous and felt very uncomfortable. The people in my class not only showed disapproval but also shock at the fact that I even chose to disagree in the first place.People can be so judgemental at times, for this reason many people choose to go along with the common theme. I immediately understood why people choose the option to stay quiet rather than choosing to speak up. I felt so uncomfortable, with the faces of my fellow classmates looking at me. Actually stepping up and going against the conformity in my class was harder than what I had planned for it to be. Although I would do it again if necessary, it wasn’t the highlight of my day. People try their best to fit in, no one wants to be different. Sometimes despite the negative feelings we have about going against the crowd it is very much necessary.
