A social norm is an idea or behavior that is accepted or encouraged in society. Norms can differ depending on time and place. For example, it was normal for the boys in Street Corner Society to drop out of school and begin working since few of them could afford college. They needed money for themselves and for their families, so being in school was a waste of time. Today, it is uncommon to not complete high school.
