For my Written Task 1, I chose to write a speech from the perspective of Romaine Patterson, who started Angel Action. Romaine Patterson founded Angel Action in 1999 in order to fight back against Westboro Baptist Church when members picketed with hate-filled signs during the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the 21-year-old who was beaten to death in Wyoming for being gay. During class, we discussed hate crimes predominately focusing on The Laramie Project involving the Matthew Shepard case. We also discussed other cases involving hate crimes such as the Brandon Teena case. In the speech, I talk about how Romaine Patterson feels about these hate crimes and the reasons she created Angel Action.
Sydney Lopez History 1302 Professor Lewellen July 23, 2016 Two Speeches by Mary Elizabeth Lease (circa 1980) One of the two speeches by Mary Elizabeth Lease was about how the government is being run by money and by the infamous Wall Street. That money has enslaved many people and that it has put many lives in peril. The second speech of the two speeches by Mary Elizabeth Lease was about how women and men are equal because it was given to the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union.
In 1974 the house judiciary committee recommended Articles of impeachment of President Nixon during the water gates scandal. The water gates scandal was a major political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s, following a break in at the DNC headquarters at water gate office in Washington D.C. and President Nixon’s administration tried to cover it up. On July 25, 1974 Barbara Jordan gave a speech on the impeachment of President Nixon during the impeachment hearing. She gave a strong passionate and well-rounded speech.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is about a freshman named Melinda Sordino who starts high school as an outcast and detested by her ex-friends and fellow peers. All because she called the cops at an end of the summer party that ended up with people getting arrested and the party being shut down. What everyone doesn’t know is that she did that because she was raped by a senior named Andy Evans at the party and didn’t know what to do after the traumatic incident and they don’t know because Melinda won’t speak. The conflict in the book is very similar to a book called Saints and Misfits by S.K Ali.
During the Progressive Era, women began reforms to address social, political, and economic issues within society. Some addressed the issues with education, healthcare, and political corruption. Others worked to raise wages and improve work conditions. Among these (women) is Carrie Chapman Catt, a leader of the women’s suffrage movement. Beginning her career as a national women’s rights activist in 1890, she was asked to address Congress about the proposed suffrage amendment shortly after two years.
Good morning Sarah, SPSY 510 (psy of exceptional children) goes into the 13 categories of disabilities in which students may be placed for special education. It's a lot of work, but it is a 8 week class. We meet Tuesdays from 5pm to 10pm. For the most part, two students present a chapter (yesterday I had a presentation on speech and language impairment and another lady talked about autism).
Lennie Smalls one of the main characters in the novel of Mice and Men, is impacted by the human rights issue of discrimination and living with an intellectual disability. “Intellectual Disability, formerly referred to as "mental retardation, is characterized by "significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills” (Death Penalty Info). Lennie exhibits several signs of having an Intellectual disability, for example, he has problems remembering things. George is constantly giving Lennie directions that he has to repeat several times to help him remember.
Connie fits (the category of the girl next door who has a double personality.) Connie grows up in a household where her father works often and hardly ever talks to his daughters, but her mother never stops nagging Connie. (Her mother says, “Stop gawking at yourself. Who are you? You think you’re so pretty?”)
Southern University’s Founders’ Day Dr. Mae C. Jemison Speech Dr. Mae Jemison is the first African American woman to go to space. Currently, she works with National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. On March 9, 2016, she gave a brilliant speech to everybody present in the F.G Clark Activity center at Southern University on the occasion of the 136th Southern University Founders’ Day.
Don’t Blame the Eater: Rebuttal In his article "Don 't Blame the Eater", David Zinczenko discusses that obesity is a grave health issue I the United States of America. He argues that almost all of the kids who eats at fast food joints are more likely to become obese. He then goes on to inform his readers that during his teenage years, he, like many other American kids, was surviving on fast-food due to it accessibility and affordability.
She also discusses how obesity can be related to health issues as well as psychological issues. A similar argument was made in the article, “Add Cake, Subtract Self-Esteem” by Caroline Knapp, where she talks about her personal experience on how her stress caused by college and relationships caused her to suffer from anorexia. She stated how starving yourself daily is a painful experience. Prose and Knapp both believe that eating food is not something to frown upon. I agree with this because as humans eating food is essential for living a healthy lifestyle.
The main setting of “Speak” is Merryweather High School in Syracuse, New York. Other settings include Melinda 's room. She spends most of her time there if she 's not in school. While she is in school, she finds a storage closet no one goes into and creates her year long art project in there. The author chose a high school for the setting to show how outcasted students can be over a rumor and how painful it can be for them.
I believe that pursuing happiness as a goal has detrimental effects. As a society, we tend to believe that we need to be full of joy at all times, but that isn't realistic - life happens. By attempting to be cheery all the time, you will never be genuinely content. You will always be searching for more and won't be satisfied with what you have, creating a permanent cycle of gloom rather than bliss.
Imagine entering your local food store and seeing that items most people eat everyday have been discontinued. Items such as coffee, apples, cucumbers and honey are no longer available to consumers. This may not be possible in our generation, but one day it could very well happen.
