Liam O'Flaherty's realistic fiction takes place in Dublin, Ireland, with a Civil War raging about. The main character must fight against the enemy, in harsh war conditions. He is not aware of his arrogance and lights, a cigarette with ease, as well as having to fix a wound which was inflicted by the enemy. The war is long and hard and survival is tough, nighttime is near, and Dublin is in darkness and war rages on. Liam O'Flaherty created the theme of being cocky can lead to harsh consequences, he illustrates this through craft moves such as setting and point of view.

An example of this is,"He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. It was dangerous. The flash might be seen in the darkness, and there were enemies watching. (O'Flaherty, 1) This is significant because the main character is overconfident in himself and found the consequence shortly after when a bullet hit the parapet, a low protective wall along the edge of a roof, bridge, or balcony, and whizzed past him almost hitting him. The enemy was near and he still took the risk, which could have taken his life. The man found himself almost getting caught by the enemy after he risked lighting a match which causes smoke and light that the enemy easily could see.
