Five days after the Confederacy’s surrender, John Wilkes Booth had successfully killed one of the most influential presidents in American history to do what he believed would redeem power to the southern states. Booth’s main goal was to tear down the Union’s government by taking down their leader and his successors, but the original plan did not involve the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Historian Christopher Hammer explained in his article "Booth's Reason for Assassination", the former actor had created a group of co conspirators and designed "a ploy on March 17 to capture Lincoln as he traveled in his carriage [and had] collapsed when the president changed his itinerary—and several of Booth’s conspirators ultimately left the group.” (Teaching History). Since the failed capture of the president, Booth hatred towards Lincoln grew after hearing the president’s goal to officially abolish slavery in his Second Presidential
“Anatomy of a Rumor” by psychologist Daniel Goleman, introduces the reader to how rumors work. Typically, rumors dealing with death or disease are the most commonly shared. Goleman successfully uses results from various research projects to explain to the audience that fear and anxiety play a role in why these rumors are spread. It’s the year 1976, the United States Senate has just called for a new inquiry into the infamous assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who was shot in 1963 during his own motorcade in Dallas, TX while running for re-election. The CIA along with the FBI were coaxed into releasing new documents on Lee Harvey Oswald, and individuals who had not given evidence previously were persuaded to come forward. Pieces of evidence such as sound recordings and photographs were being subjected to scientific research analysis using more modern equipment. In 1979 the House Select Committee on Assassinations, or (HCSA), finally came to a verdict that Lee Harvey Oswald shot three times at the president; one of which, hitting his head and killing him. It was also concluded that a fourth shot was taken from ‘the grassy knoll’, which was something that was contradicting to the statement given by the Warren Commission 16 years earlier.
One of the concepts Bill Ellis talks about in chapter 1 of Aliens, Ghosts, and Cults: Legends We Live, is to document the folklore story being told while in performance. Doing so allows folklorist to gain another sense of the story beyond just a monotone rendition being read. It also helps develop the context it was given and lets them gage the audience’s reaction to what they are hearing. This can be seen in the sample text as well when the note the laugher, such as here: E. I might tell it differnt from the other day. [laughter]
The Ominous Conspiracy Once upon a time, there existed a conspiracy ensnaring the entire globe in a terrifying but all-consuming plague spawned by the organization known as the MDH (Misery Dominates Happiness or misery), and thereupon embodied the triumphant God. Similarly, these sheep, or any other pest, lived in a lugubrious dark barn to avoid the criticism of disparities; moreover, those same depraved flies fell prey to the lies created by their superior wolves and foxes. Identically, the temporary lives of preposterous simpletons were outrageous and those who claimed to work for love, dreams, hope, friendship, or victory were trapped in the chasm. Correspondingly, Jefferson, a pesky maggot, stated that a sagacious and prudent barn allows

Where do myths come from? What is their function and what do they mean? In A Short History of Myths, Karen armstrong introduces the array of approaches used to understand the study of myths. Armstrong provides various stories about myth meanings and it functions in our lives by introducing different time periods. The concept of myth is central to all cultures because it lives in our stories and every culture in human history has created its own mythologies to understand how the universe works.
An urban legend, as defined by the Merriam –Webster dictionary, is an often a lurid story that is based on hearsay and widely circulated as true. According to Nicholas DiFonzo, a renowned author and psychology professor, urban legends are “narratives about strange, funny, or horrible events that could have happened, the details of which change to fit particular locales and time periods, and which frequently contain a moral lesson.” The stories are entertaining, include cultural references, and convey people’s anxieties about certain topics. While some consider urban legends as myths with a possibility of truth in it, these tales evolve to suit the common themes of the time.
A myth is a false belief or idea. It is usually held within an old traditional story or it is a way to explain a natural or social phenomenon, typically involving supernatural creatures or events. Myths are stories of transformation. Many people are surprised to learn that ancient myth was often at least as violent, if not more so, than the mayhem of our modern fantasies. For example, The Godfather, and its companion, Godfather II, have been justly praised for excellence in such technical matters as acting and direction; their popularity is enhanced by less pleasant preoccupations: a lust for violence accentuated in recent years; an obsession with the details of organized crime; a cynical belief that only small distinctions separate lawless behavior from ordinary business practice.
Does the secret society of the past still exist? Many seem to believe the Illuminati is still around to this day. The big question is, who is the Illuminati and where did they emerged from? Many conspirators say the Freemasons have a lot influence on them and their actions. Although it is still considered a conspiracy, the Illuminati, one of the most secretive societies do in fact exist.
Gothic Literature is a genre that was popular between 18th to 19th centuries in North Germany. It is always being associated with Dark Romanticism which the emphasize was more on nature, terror and death, horror and many more. It involves dark and gloomy setting and also unexplainable things that are beyond human senses and reason such as ghosts and monsters. The main characters, on the other hand, are always ineffectual which they do not give much effect on the story plot. This can be seen through Washington Irving’s “Rip van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” which can be considered as American gothic work in terms of its description of setting, the involvement of supernatural element in the story and also the characteristics of the main character.
There was never a definite moment in which I knew I wanted to follow a career in medicine. I think for me it was a gradual realization, as if I was born to pursue this dream. I understand that many people feel as though they are destined to become doctors or surgeons, but I believe my determination and dedication to pursuing this career is unique for the many things that have influenced me to become interested in medicine. Some of those influences include my sister, who is now a pediatrician, or the fact that I have seen Grey's Anatomy three times, or the medical mission I went on that gave me a true appreciation for the power of healthcare. I have been lucky enough to have experienced medical care around the world and I have had the chance
