Constitutional Convention: America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, will suffer no longer under the tyrannical British government but will flourish under the enlightened republic America has come to known today. The American people struggled as one, one united group of citizens in the fight for unalienable rights protected under a sturdy government. The American spirit was seen as early as the Age of Exploration in the mid-17th century, foreigners at the time, but with common motives: God, gold, and glory [2]. My ancestors sought to spread the Christian religion to as many Natives as possible, in hopes of one day restoring their savageness and instilling a devout life amongst the Lord. As a slave state in the South, we are very well versed in the treatment and necessity a slave plays in Southern culture. However, slavery has recently taken a dip in economic prosperity due to the lifeless soil in the South. Slavery is declining and we cannot continue to support a system that is not only inhumane but also economically fighting an uphill battle. Representing one of the five delegates of the state of Delaware, it is my sole purpose to abolish slavery due to its weakness, much like the Articles of Confederation. The whole state of Delaware has actually taken the initiative to frame a constitution rooted from the immorality of slavery and the economic depression it currently faces [1]. In the Delaware Constitution, a constitution I took great pride in making alongside many of my other confidantes, ratified in 1776, the ownership of slaves is illegal, the selling of slaves is illegal and any slave that arrives in Delaware from Africa is a free person, no different than any of us drafting our new form of government. I am a devout Methodist and I believe it is our duty in the world to treat everyone with the rights they are born with and to secure the rights for those that are not able to themselves. If the moral issue doesn't affect you then take a look at the economic side. The solid in the South is dead as it has been overworked. Slavery is not declining due to the lack of importation, simply because the South can no longer afford to support this system anymore. I completely understand where my fellow delegates in the South are coming from as I was a previous slave-owning state in the south. However, slavery must be abolished gradually, a large-scale abolition would cause havoc for the American population, and fulfill the motives our Lord would want us to take, all men are equal, not varying from your skin color but united as
