The American life is contrasting compared to the rest of the world. We provide health, education, and welfare of our citizens but people don’t consider the conditions that make America different from others. In America, name brand is everything. When it comes to shoes or clothing, the brand name has influenced millions of Americans to consume their products. Furthermore, America’s society has conditioned the lives of Americans to believe money and merchandise are associated with happiness through the technology and media businesses. Being that, the lives of Americans isn’t the top priority. Regarding consumption and the U.S. economy, a popular analogy is America’s consumption is the engine of the U.S. economy’s car. From what I have learned, the U.S. runs based on capitalism. Being that, materialism which leads to consumerism manifest's economic success. In other words, without materialism and consumerism, our economy could fail; it could even fall into a depression like Great Depression in the late nineteen twenties and early thirties. To be more specific, let’s say there was an exponential drop in demand for goods. The exponential drop would lead to an economic recession or depression. Then, over time millions of individuals will become unemployed. With millions of people unemployed, there would be more competition to keep or obtain jobs. With more competition between individuals to have an income for basic needs, people can and will do what they “need” to do in order to survive. The differences of purchases between “regular” and name-brand merchandise allow individuals to determine ranges of quality. In most cases, when you purchase a product that has a higher retail value; you are also paying for the higher quality. Getting a bargain is something everyone wants but being cheap could cause you to spend more money. To illustrate, let’s say you purchase a cheap or no name-brand set of makeup. With the cost being low, you have the risks of putting harmful chemicals onto your skin or having a disappointing makeup look. However, if you purchase high-end name-brand makeup such as Mac etc. you are provided information about each ingredient that is inside the makeup and you get a more pigmented look.
