Good Morning theatre makers here at the La Boite HW. Personally, I am very thrilled to be here today and present to you my directional concept for the contemporisation of this Ancient Greek play Medea by Euripides, written in 431 Bc. I’d like to acknowledge the custodians of this land, the people of the aboriginal nation, their elders past and present, the Yuggera, Jagera and Ugarapal nations. I respect their continuing culture and the contribution they make to the life of this city and this region. Medea is one of the most famous Greek mythology plays that has been produced many times throughout the past two and a half thousand years. This play is has been produced in many countries. The most extraordinary thing is Medea effectively gets most of the audience and all women of Corinth on her side, even male audience. In her great first speech we hear Medea weeping before she enters the stage, but when she comes out of the house Madea surprises everyone with her speech. She manages to tell a speech that all women can relate to, the description of women in the sexist ancient city, how women are the most suffering people in Corinth. The production of Medea will still maintain Euripides original text and the storyline but will be set in Egypt, Cairo 2011 International Women’s Day. This is around the time where women of Egypt were demanding freedom and respect for rights. This production will emphasise the dramatic meaning of this play and how Medea is still relevant in today’s society. This connects to Medea telling her great speech about how women weren 't treated good enough by men. Furthermore, we still see this in today’s, women are still being treated unfairly and looked at
