According to the Oxford dictionary, a gadfly is a fly that bites and agitates livestock. In Plato’s Apology, it is claimed that Socrates compares himself to a gadfly that is attached to the city of Athens (29e). Then, in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. mentions Socrates in his letter to the clergymen and compares himself to Socrates claiming, “so must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society…” (89-90). In both passages, there is an importance to be a gadfly in society and by being a gadfly, both men are able to create a change in their societies.
In the book, "Long Why Down by Jason Reynolds shows us that the structure of texts can often impact the meaning. Some of the ways it incorporates this by 'sperating sentences, repeating words, and in a way talking to the reader. The first way this author uses structure to affect the meaning Is by separating words and sentences One of the ways this shows meaning is by portraying certain emotions such as contusion, anger awe, etc. In the book, the sentences are usually scattered and separated when the character is overwhelmed with many emotions.
On February 19, 2010 Tiger woods, a well-known golfer, took to the stand in front of a small group of family members, cameras, and media personalities. The subject of the press conference was to apologize for the cheating spree that he went on while married to Elin Nordegren. Woods took to the stand bearing multiple pieces of paper which he read directly from. During the speech he carried no pity for himself but at the same time asked the media to respect his privacy and allow him to make the changes needed in his life. From that moment on, the criticism, mockery, and foolish jokes began to surround Woods and his family.
Throughout all Shange’s book “For colored girls who have considered suicide/When the rainbow is enuf”, She works to give each woman a background whether it is a good or bad one, and then she uses the women’s backgrounds to help develop a story of how they found their courage to create a voice for themselves. The beginning of the poem, “Sorry” is interesting because it does not immediately start out with the lady in blue taking about how she was done with hear people say that they were sorry, it starts out with the other women in the book giving examples of how people have said that they were sorry in the past. In the poem it the lady in red says,” ‘now I know that ya know I love ya, but I ain’t ever gonna love ya like ya want me to love ya, I’m sorry’”.

An apology. It seems like a simple thing, but a poorly constructed one can do much more harm than good. It takes skill to craft an effective apology, which is what apologia is. We need apologia because there has to be a venue with which public figures like athletes or politicians can try to justify their actions themselves or have their actions be justified by others. Apologia gives public figures the opportunity to be redeemed, even if they have done something wrong, because of the good that they’ve already done and/or because of the change they will make in the future.
“I here present you, courteous reader, with the record of a remarkable period in my life: according to my application of it, I trust that it will prove not merely an interesting record, but in a considerable degree useful and instructive. In that hope it is that I have drawn it up; and that must be my apology for breaking through that delicate and honourable reserve which, for the most part, restrains us from the public exposure of our own errors and infirmities.” This quote is appeal to ethos because he is trying to convey his reader that the passage we about to reader to not judge him. It tell you that the Author is trying to apologies for his mistake. “Tearing away that decent drapery”
Socrates was a greek philosopher who found himself in trouble with his fellow citizens and court for standing his grounds on his new found beliefs from his studies about philosophical virtue, justice, and truth. In “Apology” written by Plato, Socrates defended himself in trial, not with the goal of escaping the death sentence, but with the goal of doing the right thing and standing for his beliefs. With this mindset, Socrates had no intention of kissing up to the Athenians to save his life. Many will argue that Socrates’ speech was not very effective because he did not fight for his life, he just accepted the death sentence that he was punished with. In his speech he said, “But now it’s time to leave, time for me to die and for you to live.”
It was like no one cared about millions of people getting slaughtered. After WWII people has said never again. Well it happened again, no one did anything about it. For that the US and UN should have at least said some kind of sorry. President at the time, Bill Clinton, actually went to Rwanda to apologize.
Plato’s The Apology is a unique work that looks at the speech that Socrates made in a trial in his defense for not recognizing the gods. The paradoxical thing in this speech is that it is anything but an apology, but rather a clear defense that is present and steadfast in his position. The manner in which he was sentenced, seemed very harsh and is something that I would have not done. I would not convict Socrates of the crime because as he stated in the work, attempting to silence him causes more harm to those that engaged in the conviction rather than the harm it caused to himself. This quote by Socrates suggested that one must deal with processes in a logical manner, rather than just convicting someone to a death sentence.
Despite the title of this historical piece of work, this speech, made by Socrates at his trial, was anything but an apology. Plato, who wrote Apology, was a student of Socrates and this is his account of the trial. Even though he was present at the trial, the colloquy may have been adjusted by Plato to reflect what he thought Socrates should have said or what he thought Socrates meant to say. Plato was very fond of Socrates, therefore the way he may present him can be bias. Socrates attempted to persuade the men of Athens of his innocence by presenting himself as a good man and an authority of knowledge, as declared by the Delphic oracle.
The number of different word roots is defined as it sounds. Different word roots are similar to free morphemes but are measured by calculating all the words that do not have the same root. For example, the word "ball", no matter how many times it is used, will be calculated as one word. Total main body of words are calculated by totaling all the words within a
In the last scene of the music video, as Christina sings she runs out of the tent and falls to the ground in grief. she is seen holding the elephant necklace her father gave her when she was a child. When she looks up she sees her father in the distance and reaches out for him, however she realizes that her father is not really there. An apologetic tone is displayed in this scene. The speaker (Christina) is shown crying grieving her father’s death “If I had just one more day, I would tell you how much that I've missed you since you've been away, Oh, it's dangerous, it’s so out of line to try to turn back time, I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do,
Nowadays, according to the various kinds of sports events, fans of each sport event seems likely to apply different rules and attitudes to the players of the each event. As looking at the story of ‘The Richard Hockey Riot’ and ‘The Soccer Team’s Apology Letter’, the players in both stories also used different ways of apologies as to the characteristics of the events. A team or a player, who broke the rules of each sport event, attempted different ways of apologies on the recipient for the apology, the level of the apology, and the effect of the apology. At first, when Richard encouraged by himself to discuss his apology in the public, his intention of the recipient for the apology was the hockey fans and the players of the Montreal Canadiens.
Socrates was a great philosopher of the Greek world. He was quite an atypical and distinctive person. Being different from all the other philosophers of the land, Socrates was teaching his students ideas totally out of the ordinary from what the society believed was right. As a result, he displeased many people so much that they decided to get rid of him. Socrates was put to trial, accused of spoiling the youth of Athens, tried and sentenced to death.
