Not So Social Media Technology and social media are two of the utmost platforms for expressing one’s self in today’s world; the idea that young people are developing social issues because of these services is one that draws much controversy, but with recent studies, this fact is becoming increasingly true. Social media is not always a harmful thing; it gives people a place to express themselves and connect with others from across the world. However, it rarely stops at simply expressing one’s self. Young people get so caught up in likes, friend requests, and self-gratification that they tend to lose track of their surroundings. Rarely do people choose to post bad things about their lives, but they are more than quick to post something that makes them look good or makes other jealous. This, in some ways, implements the middle school minded mentality that one must impress others for his or her own life to be worthwhile. Everyone goes through a phase of caring what others think, that is natural; however, a phase is exactly what it should be, not a lifestyle. Jessica Brown writes, “Two studies involving more than 700 students found that depressive symptoms, such as low mood and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, were linked to the quality of online interactions.” (par. 13) A person should never feel “worthless” because of something that they saw on social media. However, with users posting degrading content and vicious comments, this is something that needs to be addressed.
