In recent years, social media has become an increasingly daily routine in society's lives. While it has brought many benefits, including the ability to connect with others and share information, it has also raised concerns about its impact on mental health social media has been found to have a destructive effect on one's social morality, mental health, self-esteem, and even raising anxiety levels. Despite its overwhelming appearance, social media like Instagram and Facebook allow individuals to maintain connections with friends and family who are far away, which can be a source of comfort and support to those who don't have any close by. Finding difficulty in interacting with other people has gone up due to things such as the worldwide pandemic that happened in the year 2020-2021. Online media became so much more popular because socializing outside and types of entertainment were very limited for about 2 years. For those who struggle with social anxiety or difficulty making friends, these platforms provide an easier way to communicate and connect with others. Therefore, with the help of these safe spaces it provides, people with those social anxiety problems find it way easier to communicate with people and help them stay up to date on loved ones' lives. Social media has also served as a space for emotional support during tough times, providing comfort and a place to go where people can find others going through the same thing or similar. According to Pew Research, 71% of teens say social media provides them a place to express their creative side and helps them be themselves. Despite all the good effects social media can have, the negatives out rule just about everything stated above. Social media is a large rabbit hole that can become anything at any given time. Another way to look at the statement of how it could help individuals with social anxiety, it can also be very damaging. Social interactions are very important for one's mental health, without them, it could cause extreme cases of depression or feelings of being alone. The online interactions also completely take away the learning and practice needed for the real world such as things like jobs or talking to strangers daily. Without this practice in the real world, the online chatting system can bring an individual further away from reality than before causing the anxiety to become increasingly worse. With social media like Instagram, people post and scroll through pictures of others almost daily, these posts have a place to leave comments and interact with the user. When posting these pictures it's found that the rate of self esteem has gone lower in the past couple of years due to cyberbullying or modern day beauty outlooks. With everyone being able to give an opinion on a post, a large percentage of these comments are negative toward the user.
