The Subject and Power Analysis in Divergence Introduction “The founders built the wall to keep the people 'save'. And to maintain the peace ad away from war, the founders divided people into factions, five factions to be exact. And this living place located in Chicago is governed by the Abnegation.” This is just the very first part of the narration of Divergence which, tells the audience enough that this movie is going to set place in an alternate universe of Chicago, America. The first kind of subject is illustrated perfectly by Eric, the very first instructor from Dauntless who is revealed to be very strict and very obedient toward rules. Eric is very much controlled by the higher ups, and unless he did so he would lost his position and might be thrown on the same position as the other. Meanwhile the second kind of subject is best pictured by Tris. Once she entered Dauntless and met the instructors she instantly have to position herself as the ‘subject’ or the ‘student’ of the instructor. However this paper will only analyze Tris as the main subject. By using her character, it can be seen just how even from the very beginning Tris has never felt like she belong in her own society when she proclaims, “Everyone knows where they belong. Except for me.” The film creates a conflict by using the theme of a segmented society. Throughout the movie Tris is torn between her family and the society she wished on living. There are multiple authority figures that are superior to her place in the society she lives at: from her parents, instructors, leaders and all the way to government officials.
