A public service is a service which is provided by government to people living within its jurisdiction. Public services can be described as law enforcement, fire brigades, and a military. Access to these resources can be viewed as a fundamental human right as they all exist for the preservation of life and enforcement of a system of rules. As members of the United States Armed Forces we are obligated to support the interests of the United States and some/all of its citizens. With this responsibility comes a duty to public service. The Armed Forces are funded by the American tax payer, which as a result often puts service members under the watchful eye of conscious citizens. This core value can be expressed in a service member’s duty to service multiple ways. In regards to hours of duty although an individual may have the ability to leave their place of work early their core value of “Integrity first” should motivate them to fulfill an entire duty day with either their tasking’s or administration work. Being a positive role model to peers and a representative to their unit an individual who completes full consecutive duty days shines a positive light on the United States Armed Forces that civilian taxpayers can appreciate. “Service before self” (the second core value of the Air Force) can be applied to a service member’s obligation to serve full duty days as they would prioritize their unit’s success over their own personal satisfaction. The statement was from a series of pamphlets he released titled The American Crisis which inspired colonists to support the American Revolutionary war. In his words this great American philosopher brought forth the idea of one’s duty to country and wrote of the war with Brittan in consideration to the common man’s language. The quote itself brought forth a new found patriotism which led men from their homes and families to fight the imperialism of the British Empire. Selfless acts of duty to country were performed by men not bound by contract for the interest of some/all of the colonists in the new world. As Americans and as Airmen we must all embody the moral imperative to public service of which we swore an oath to serve. By exemplifying our core values and fulfilling our duties as members of the United States Armed Forces we support the American taxpayer as they have always supported us. Although it may seem monotonous to many the lack of work we are tasked with we should always strive to be excellent and do our best to go beyond what’s required of us. The “fatigues” we may endure are our payment to our forefathers for the freedoms many have fought and died for.
