In the play Medea written by Euripides there are many themes shown to the reader in just the prologue. One of these many themes present in the prologue is betrayal which is Jason leaving Medea for a princess. The second theme represented is vengeance which is what Medea wants for her broken heart since Jason has left her. And the third and final theme is regret which is very present in the rest of the play and changes from certain situations. The main purpose of the prologue is to introduce these major themes to the reader.
In the beginning of the story the nurse speaks to the tutor about how Jason has betrayed Medea it shows how Medea is being affected by by this event. In the quote the Nurse is telling the tutor how the betrayal is to the vows Jason had made to her, “And poor Medea, scorned and deserted, can do nothing but appeal to the vows they made to one another, and remind him of the eternal pledge they made with their right hands clasped”(302). This is showin the reader the horrible betrayal of vows Jason has done and how Medea is not able to do a single thing about it. As a result, Jason has betrayed Medea and their vows and has left her feeling regretful for leaving her home land.
