Thoreau believed that it was the corruption and greed of human institutions that lead to the eventual downfall of man. This topic has been sowed as a backbone in may of the mid 20th century. When the Nation turned the corner into Science Fiction, a surprising amount of stories followed the trend. His journey started off with him tracking down and interviewing the former employers of Felix Hoenikker, the creator of the atomic bomb. We quickly see that all that institution cared about Dr. Hoenikker for was the weapons that he created. As the tale progresses, we learn that Dr. Hoenikker died and his children took possession of his ICE-9. As the story progresses, we find all of the character winding up on the island of San Lorenzo. This is where we learn that each of the three remaining Hoenikkers were swindled out of their ICE-9. Angela gave hers to the US government under the false promise of a faithful husband. Newt’s was stolen by a Russian spy that had pretended to love him. Frank surrendered his to an island dictator who provided him with a second-in-command position in his regime. Sadly that dictator fell ill and decided to take his own life in the disparity of death. That one act of selfishness resulted in the death of the entire planet. The goodness of the Hoenikker family is constantly being transgressed upon by large institutions as their good natured intentions in life to find
